Album Notes

"I believe that Dr. Zoo’s original material has (the) most commercial potential to achieve worldwide success", Marc Vincent, VP Sennheiser.

Dr. Zoo is "Afro-Celtic Rock" singer/songwriter Randal Arsenault from the Celtic Island of Newfoundland, Canada, who recently completed his doctorate in zoology in South Africa. Dr. Zoo is currently touring in support of his sophomore release "42". The album and the stage show follow the journey of a boy from Newfoundland to Africa and back again, in search of the meaning of life. "These songs are about my thoughts, experiences and travels", says Randal, "as well as a larger story influenced by books such as The Alchemist and Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy..."

Dr. Zoo has recently opened for Johnny Clegg, Freshly Ground, Hugh Masekela and Oliver Mtukudzi in southern Africa, and enjoyed thousands singing “Sawubona, Unjani” to his song “Welcome to Africa”. The Dr Zoo band includes Copsy Mwansa from the Congo (guitars), Daniel Sifundza from Mozambique (bass), Jonathan Bunce from the UK (fiddle) and David Mambo from Zimbabwe (drums).

“My biggest influence has been Paul Simon's Graceland" says Randal. "My passion has always been to collaborate with great African musicians and share my love of the continent through music”. “I also strive to highlight issues in Africa such as HIV/AIDs, the growing orphan population and child headed house holds. "At the same time I try and explain that it is not all doom and gloom like we see in the news and their is much hope for the future”. “African countries and cultures are some the most vibrant on the planet and we should all share in their beauty”.

Dr. Zoo has toured Canada, Japan, UK, Ireland, US, South Africa and Swaziland, as well as showcasing at the JUNOS, Canadian Music Week, and East Coast Music Awards. Dr. Zoo was nominated 2006 SOCAN Songwriter of the Year.

Dr. Zoo's self titled debut album produced four radio singles, and garnered a nomination for 2003 rock artist of the year by Music NL, and a finalist position in the National Songwriting Competition. Dr. Zoo is sponsored by Sennheiser Canada and Sabian Cymbals.

Hey Randal. The show at the Fat Cat was the best time that I have seen you play, you looked so comfortable up on that stage I dont know if it was the band, the club, or just the songs that you were playing but whatever it was worked. The difference from the last time I heard you play to that show is night and day when I first heard Dr. Zoo I feel in love with the songs but it sounded like a demo, a group of friends getting together for some kicks but now you sound like a rock star. Telling the stories between the songs and talking to the audience brought a inmate feeling to the show. I guess the one thing I am saying is that the show kicked ass. The CD is amazing listening to the new one and the old one you see how far you have come. The first CD sounds like a demo, a great demo but a demo. 42 sounds like a pro CD. Again you sound more comfortable on this CD it is like you have grown up in the years since the first CD. Each song brings something new to the table and yet flows from the one before it and into the one after it with easily. Songs go from sounding like Blue Rodeo to Dispatch and yet stay uniquely Dr. Zoo. Not good at writing a review but I love this CD. This has just brought my love for Dr. Zoo along with you. Keep going and stay with it waiting for the third CD and catching you the next time I can. Love, Krista

Randal, you have a great great great work here. As you know, I am already a fan, but I have listened to this critically and here is what I think. As you gain more and more fans, this will be more and more appreciated. By the way I can hear Mitch all over this recording (His influence, at least. Please make sure you send him my best). I am on my third pass through the album and the deeper I get the more it all connects....and I have to congratulate you on a few DRAWING card tracks: AFRICA came out great. YOU NAILED IT buddy. It needs to be released! Growing Down blew me away. The lyrics are awesome. 40 days has always been one of my favs, as well as What Do You Want. You Got To Know What You Need should have been titled You May Think, but it is still as great as I remembered from the first time I heard it live in St. John’s . I may have a new favorite in Have Mercy. This one has great potential. And the closing track is just simply brilliant (Home Now). Wow! You’ve done your part, now you need the help to get it out there. No matter what happens, you need to be very proud of this work. Warm regards, John McArthur Lebanna Solutions Inc. www.LebannaSolutions.com
