Album Notes

Innocent melodies expose shadowy places. Electric beats underscore California dreams. Dark Side of the Cop narrates the story of a badge from Detroit, lovesick and lonely, and follows him to Los Angeles in search of his childhood love. Originally conceived as an alternate soundtrack to the 80’s classic Beverly Hills Cop, Dark Side evolved out of “one of the greatest origin-gimmicks ever” into a shimmering synth-pop masterpiece backed by an electronic orchestra that would make Brian Wilson smile. In between hellish 17-hour Pottery Barn truck-driving gigs — and in between bands — songwriter Marco Panella immersed himself in the creation of the album. Huddled in his cramped San Francisco apart- ment, surrounded by synths, samplers, and microphones, Panella channeled his love of 70’s songwriting through a sun-drenched elec- tronic sound. “Living in California, so close to an ocean you can’t swim in, in a city you can’t afford to live in – it really gave me focus and inspiration for the music.” Dark Side of the Cop is starting to make waves — press is rolling in and the buzz is building. Pitchfork Media and Magnet Magazine have already sung their praises, and reviews in Urb, XLR8R, the SF Weekly, and the Seattle Times are in the works. Panella and Dark Side will be touring steadily throughout the summer and fall.

REVIEWS

synth-pop electric beats beverley hills cop alternate soundtrack
author: Brian
The album starts with Detroit (Prelude) which is a soft instrumental track, in which you hear a definite synth-pop style. It rolls right into the second track, Stuck in the Darkness without missing a beat. Right away you hear the voice of Tyler Gibbons. After about a minute into the track it switches into a more upbeat style, still maintaining a bit of electronic style. The next track, the best chance of a single on the album is Shaky Little Rules. This track is also a more upbeat track, with a bit of rock stylings, mixed with the synth-pop and electronic style. The band lists their influences as Elvis Costello, Prince, Randy Newman, ELO, and Brian Wilson. As far as lyrics goes, the story as told in the biography above is a sufficient description. The vocals are soft throughout most tracks, though powerful in the manner that it isnt pushed into the background as you find in a lot of this style of album. Don't Be Jealous starts out with almost a jazz sound, with a piano in the background, which is present throughout the whole track. The track is a little slower in tempo than the previous tracks but has a nice sound to it, with some added guitars and synth bass. The album totals up at about 36 minutes in length, many of the tracks coming in under the 3 minute mark. The album is unique in that it is the first of three concept album, part 2 due out later this year. this first album "partnered" with the movie Beverly Hills Cop. The album maintains the consistant style throughout. If anything I would be interested to see how they progress in their next effort(s). While I had mixed feelings when initially seeing what the cd was about, the album is a great effort and a unique storyline to base an album off of.
