Album Notes

Born David Patrick Andrew Sutherland Aug 1st 1970 Hammersmith, London.
Style Singer songwriter/Britgrass.It was in early 1993 that Dave
Sutherland discovered the music scene in and around South London. By the end
of ’94 Dave was recording demos and gigging as far afield as Kentish Town!
An early break was to perform at The Mean Fiddler in London which
subsequently led to a booking at the Phoenix festival the following summer.
With the likes of Bob Dylan and Van Morrison on the bill Dave was in good
company (if only on the Acoustic Tent!) A nice twist was that the heavens
opened prior to the set and Mr Sutherland played to a crowd of 300!The
drive, gig, sleep, drive routine continued throughout the U.K. with Dave
returning to London to a midweek residency at Hardys in Greenwich. A few
shows opening for Glenn Tilbrook, an autumn tour in Ireland and an invite to
the Glasgow Jazz Festival brought the year to a close.1996 found Dave’s
songwriting and fingerstyle guitar cross paths with Bert Jansch. This whole
period was to be invaluable for Dave. An apprenticeship of sorts, Dave
toured and opened the shows in some major theatres around the U.K. During
this time Bert recorded and produced "Navigator" Dave’s first album.
Undoubtedly the Jansch stamp has rubbed off in some form or other in Dave’s
work to date.Continuing to play the London circuit, things were about to
change with the chance meeting of U.S. pedal steeler Bill Fleming. Two
rehearsals before three London shows and "London bootleg" was put together
from the recordings. An invitation to go to America was instantly accepted,
and that summer Dave touched down in Atlanta, Georgia. The short time in the
States was enough for Dave to want to return as soon as possible! In March
the following year Dave played his first U.S. tour accompanied by Martin
Brown on Mandolin and Fiddle with Mo Clifton again on bass. Appearances at
HarvestFest and Atlanta Dogwood festivals were among the highlights. Dave
returned to London - It was time for a new album……."Comfortable Junction"
was finished by Jan ’99. Recorded in Greenwich at Escapade Studios.
Produced by Martin Brown and Gary Brady, the sessions were mainly recorded
live with a full band behind the songs. Initially released in the U.S., Dave
again crossed the pond for a tour stretching from New York to Florida to
promote "Comfortable Junction." Nine states in all, including radio sessions
and the odd television appearance has seen an increase in Dave’s popularity
there. His latest studio effort is “American Refrigerator” produced by Dave
Dix. These songs reflect on his time spent in America and the influences
his “Brit-Grass” style takes from there. Did you know an American
Refrigerator is 33% bigger than a British one?

This album is fantastic. I bought it a week ago and everyone I have played it for wants to buy it. The songs themselves have really classic, simple melodies, and are extremely well constructed. The bluegrass instrumentals are excellent. This is honestly some of the best songwriting I have heard. If you're already intereted enough to read this, just go ahead and buy it.
