Album Notes

'To the bone' is Nicole Dueck striking debut record. It is an album of stark simplicity stripped down to its bare essentials-- to the bone.

From a childhood singing in children's choirs and studying classical piano, her musical sensibilities are well honed. Nicole's magnetic voice moves with honesty and candor and her smokey tone is sultry and rich. Her Guitar playing uses space, rhythm, and buttery notation to create dynamic counterpoint.

Leaving home at the tender age of 15 has distilled in her a unique sense of the world and her songs speak as vivid observations of her encounters.

From the country-swing of 'My Blue' to the moodier-than-Nick Cave 'Gettin' Out', To the Bone has a remarkable range in songwriting style and showcases Nicole Dueck's darkly humorous take on life.

REVIEWS

Wonderful, moving songs, it you hate Jewel, this is for you

Admittedly, I'm often slightly reluctant to listen to music by young singer songwriters (oh so sensitive, oh so maudlin...) but here is a glowing exception. This record is as dark as hell but without the tiresome self-indulgence (though one could argue that just making a record is self indulgent) of so much out there. Listen to the clips of My Blue as well as Gettin' Out then tell me Nicole Dueck doesn't have one of the most starkly beautiful and unadorned voieces you've heard. Don't take my word for it--have a listen.

Simple yet far from simplistic
author: Alex Mlynek: Broken Pencil Magazine
Throw Shelby Lynne, Hope Sandoval, and Ricky Lee Jones in a blender and you'd have a sense of Nicole Dueck's music. For those of you new to these fabulous ladies, let me explain what I'm referring to exactly. The soulful country of Ms. Lynne, the Husky bitter-sweetness of Ms. Sandoval, and the lady hanging out with Tom Waits at a smoky pool hall in L.A. drinking whisky and making the coolist music around (Ms. Lee Jones). To the bone is a mostly down home acoustic affair, with organ thrown in for good measure. Simple yet far from simplistic.
