Perhaps best described as "jangle rock"...it's alt. country rock...big on the 12-string Rickenbacker sounds of the Byrds, B-3 organ, thoughtful lyrics, great lead and harmony vocals...like Tom Petty meets the Byrds meets Steve Earle.

Album Notes

"Best Americana Album!" nomination for San Diego Music Awards!

Influenced by such timeless musicians such as Tom Petty, Steve Earle, Chris Hillman, Gene Clark, Kim Richey, and Gram Parsons, singer-songwriter Derek Duplessie creates his own "jangle" California country-rock sound with his band the Desert Poets.

With pedal steel guitar, bass, drums, acoustic and 12-string electric Rickenbacker guitars, harmonica, B-3 organ, and tight harmonies, the Desert Poets know how to rock their country roots.

Nominated for the 2000 San Diego Music Awards as "Best Acoustic Artist," Derek, now 14 years old, continues to excel and evolve as a formidable artist and songwriter.

Recording three songs last year for Century Music Group Nashville, Derek and his band have just added seven more songs to complete their new CD, (((Stereo))).

Check out this sound that is all their own, the rockin' yet poetic music of Derek Duplessie and the Desert Poets.

Most excellent sequel. Great lyrics accompany cool instrumentation
author: Kieran Whittemore
It's clear that Derek's voice has changed, but in a way that's a good thing since his voice doesn't drown in the instrumentation has it happened a few times on the old album. There's a few tracks where Derek's voice clearly can't keep up, and it sounds rather awkward, but besides that, it's a fantastic sounding album with excellent rocking country music with an edge. If only there were more stuff like this!

refreshing, uncompromising grit long overdue
author: ray
((((STEREO)))) shakes and wakes us to the here and now with an urgency demanded by our troubled times. The final three tracks shine with Nashville polish, especially the restless “Angry All The Time.” The first 7 tracks contrast, carrying us to a realm of old songs made new, featuring Kevin Ryan. This man should not be allowed to play steel guitar without a fire extinguisher nearby. Derek’s cover of “American Dreamer” penetrates the soul with its lightning and thunder simplicity. “I Won’t Back Down” gives encouragement to be true to yourself, especially if you’re stuck in the darkness of “L.A. Standard Time.” If you’re hurtin’ from the heartache of “She Don’t Love Nobody,” you’ll need the hope of “When You’re Around” to get through to the celebration of “Back Home To You.” Welcome reminders of our fragile existence, our untapped persistence. A reliable map for the roads we explore and those left behind, DD&DP remind us truth still exists through storms and shadows, with the belief there just may be some sunshine on the other side of that hill. This is the refreshing, uncompromising grit of Derek Duplessie and the Desert Poets in ((((STEREO)))).
