If you sit down with the people closest to Durell, some might describe him as outgoing, energetic, comedic – and even a bit shy. But you’d never guess judging from his upcoming debut release that there’s anything bashful about the candid crooner. His new album exudes the confidence, smooth charm and soulful delivery of an industry veteran. And although he hasn’t earned that title just yet, it’s crystal clear that he’s making considerable headway toward becoming the next big R&B sensation.
Durell first began singing at the age of four at his church in San Francisco. Over time his sound evolved and he began to grab the attention of movers and shakers in the music industry. He’s performed throughout the Bay Area as a vocalist and actor, and fans are drawn to his undeniable stage presence and explosive performances. He’s developed a following in both his hometown, as well as the Atlanta area. A Morehouse College alumnus, he credits his college experience for helping him to grow and mature. In fact, Durell says that many of his college experiences have heavily influenced the content of his debut album.
If Durell’s life had a soundtrack, a wide range of artists would be represented on it. With strong roots in the church, he’s always admired gospel class acts such as The Clark Sisters and Daryl Coley. He also grew up listening to Motown hits and legendary artists such as Barry White, The Jackson 5 and Whitney Houston. Durell sites Stevie Wonder and Donny Hathaway as major influences and gives credit to popular artists such as Anthony Hamilton, Beyonce, and label mates RoGue for the evolution of his unique style. While his upcoming album is a tapestry of classic influences and contemporary grooves, all in all, fans will agree that Durell’s sound is both timeless and universal.
In 2008, Durell inked a deal with EMK Productions, an independent record label based in Los Angeles. His debut album, On My Mind, is a pensive, honest, spirit-filled and passion-infused collection of songs exploring the thoughts of a young man in his twenties. From first loves and heartache to the challenges and pressures of becoming a man, On My Mind is where Durell’s talents and passions meet, and where his potential soars. From upbeat party tracks to seductive ballads, Durell’s album doesn’t disappoint. His smooth vocals combined with poignant lyrics will make the ladies swoon and have the fellas nodding their heads in agreement.
When asked to name some of the notable figures that he admires, Martin Luther King Jr. and Oprah Winfrey are the first to come to mind. And just as they’ve etched their place in history, Durell is well on his way to making his own mark on the music industry and beyond.
