His music piles grungy guitars and alternative hooks on a base of acousticy singer-songwriter goodness. His impressionistic lyrics are rarely literal, and contain more than a touch of the surreal. But it's the sincerity in the words and the energy in the songs that distinguish Dylan's music and make his performances a treat.
Dylan Ward grew up in southwest Virginia, but the Appalachian bluegrass and redneck alt-country of the area are a distant influence on his music. Neil Young is closer to the mark. And Buffalo Tom (remember Buffalo Tom? No? Remember Dinosaur, Jr? Aha!). Recently, he has listened to far too much Wilco and Grateful Dead for anyone's good. In his performances he covers tunes by all of these bands, but his own songs are the mainstays.
Airport Weather
It's not quite moody wuss-rock, but it's often melancholy, and it's always dramatic. Airport Weather is centered around the demise of a relationship - not the situation, but the psychological weirdness that goes with it. This is mixed up, as in life, with thoughts of home, all-nighters, and the abstract images that surface when you're strung out on endless airplane rides.
