Bien Formula'o
author: Chano Santamaria
Merengue + Reggaetón + Rock = e276. There isn't a huge variety of Latin rhythms here, in fact, the bulk of Quien Es Quien is centered around Merengue grooves. But herein lies the potency of e276, they create an interesting record with a handful of rhythms. Quite a distinction from the Afro-Cuban Tumbao and Guaguancó too oftenly used. Its also this distilled mix of rhythms that gives the record cohesion. This is on the verge of being a Tropicalia album realized by a rock orchestra. Well produced, well arranged, very polished Latin Alternative. Elimar's vocals are incredibly distinct, and her energy is absoultely contagious. Charlie Jirov's drumming invokes Merengue rhythms via seldom use of traditional instruments. There are several moments though when grooves work against e276. Tra La La, Candela, and Ya No Creo = the weaker tracks because the band relies too heavily on groove rather than actual song. While many groups struggle to find their sound on the debut, e276's artistic direction is very clear and confident. This lends itself to very exciting listen and a code we're sure to recite more often: e276.
