About the East Bay Banjo Club
The East Bay Banjo Club was founded in 1963 as a nonprofit organization and dedicated to the spirit of playing happy banjo music. Currently there are about 40 very enthusiastic members under the musical leadership of Bill Cooper, the Music Director since 1978. From outright beginners to seasoned professionals, the club always welcomes new members. The range of banjo playing experience ranges from several months to as much as thirty years.
The club has performed at hundreds of venues. Some venues include; community parades in Contra Costa County and San Francisco, CA, appearances at private parties, public parks, crab feeds, picnics, senior citizen centers, shopping centers, and retail stores.
In September of 2005, the club was sent to the Czech Republic by the Orinda/Tabor Sister City Foundation, where they presented traditional American jazz before large, enthusiastic crowds at an annual Medieval Festival. The group certainly demonstrated that traditional American jazz, played on the banjo, excites and delights even those who have never before experienced it.
Each year they donate their earnings from play outs to the Las Trampas School for Developmentally Delayed Adults, to the Barbara Milliff Center, to the Bay Area Crisis Nursery, and the Capital Kids Banjo Band.
So, if you love banjos, happy music, and fun, please stop by, take a look and listen! Better yet, bring your banjo and sit in with the club! If you don’t have a banjo, the club provides banjos for purchase with a buy back guarantee. That way, you can sell the banjo back to the club if you decide it just isn’t for you.
