"We Broke Up, And We Made Music, And We Got Back
Together, And We Made Music, And We Got Married, And We Made Music, And We Broke Up, And We Made A Kid, And We Got Back Together, And We Made Music" - Easy Anthems
"With such an exceptional duo as this, it is natural to wonder where their interesting dynamic emanates from. Many other married couples with or without children exist in the world of alt-rock, look no further than Low and Yo La Tengo, but Easy Anthems have something they do not - friction. It's (hopefully) not anything that will tear them apart, but the opposition of Phil and Vanesa Jimenez is completely compulsive. The way he almost shouts underneath her soft cooing as if undermining the tenderness she brings is devastatingly interesting to hear on 'BB Shooting'. This quiet tension runs through the whole record like blood.
Instrumentally, Easy Anthems have a rare sophistication that belies the simplicity of the songs' appearance. Listen to the wonderfully intricate string arrangements that grace most of the tracks. Particular kudos goes to the soaring cello note that slices into your ears in conjunction with Vanessa's 'aaah'-ing on 'Go Back To Pittsburgh', for it is akin to having someone blow a jet of cold water into your face. With a fire hose. The subtle intelligence of the taut bounces littered throughout their debut is wholly reminiscent of Yo La Tengo's poppier shades, and its no bad thing. The sweetness is certainly counterbalanced by the slightly sinister sentiments batted around the place, again, making this record monumentally entertaining.
With quality and attention to detail in such massive quantities over a mere thirty-six minutes, it's difficult to see where Easy Anthems could have squeezed any more veiled sweetness into this record. Simply, it is the sound of a complex relationship told with sensitivity, vigor, animation and emotional clout to rival any of their pseudo-folk-Americana contemporaries."

A BIG SURPRISE

Easy Anthems’ debut album is a big surprise. They have recorded 11 fantastic songs. I listened to them by internet and my space, but it’s not the same to have their beautiful limited edition made with care and listening to the songs while you’re reading the words and looking at the drawings and pics. There are some songs that are highlights to me, as ‘B B Shooting’ –I felt in love with this songs the first time I listened…-, ‘Restless Beauty’, ‘The Only One’, ‘Go back to Pittsburgh’ or ‘Old Suitcase’, and you find out new surprises every time you listen to the whole album. I love the way it has been recorded, the instrumentation and arrangements -wonderful –and the way Vanessa and Philip sing every word, with such a feeling, so deeply and full of passion, an interesting dialogue between their notes and the instruments; sometimes they’re phrasing the words like bullets, sometimes like confidences, every word as every note has its colour and its right feeling, the perfect mood... great strings and keyboards arrangements, apparently simple harmonies, their particular trip on the music they love and know so well. They made music, real music, real folk, popular music, there’s nothing artificial in their work. Every note sounds like a heartbeat, an avalanche of great sounds and true feelings.

One gorgeous song after another

I bought this after listening a bit on Myspace, and it has rarely left my CD player. There is such a range of songs: honky-tonk, gentle poetry, spunky fits of fun... and everything pleases. The range of instruments and the skill represented here is so much more than two people should be allowed to have, and we are so lucky to have them share it with us! I can't wait for more from this group.

A must have

Picked up this on the strength of the songs posted on the artists website ( www.easyanthems.org ). The packaging is well put together and very substantial, in a nice brown box with a "book of words", alot of care went into this.
The cd is great, well worth the purchase. Just when i was getting sick of new music and delving back into my collection whenever I wanted something to listen to.. I stumbled across this and am very happy I did so. Check out "BB Shooting" on the artists website for a sample.... the whole album is of this calibre. Looking forward to more!
