The Echo Division’s new album, “Burn the Ships,” breaks new ground for the southern California band. The tracks on this album find the band exploring new territories in their guitar work, lyrics, and production style. While tracks such as “Welcome In” and “Yours” carry the punch and aggression of their previous offering, “Under California Stars,” the Echo Division’s new recording features introspective tracks such as “Untitled,” and even experiments with some country-flavored acoustic roots-rock on “Long Way Down.”
One listen through “Burn the Ships” is enough to know that this is the sound of a band growing, stretching, and enjoying every minute of it. For their take on INXS’s classic “Never Tear Us Apart” the Echo Division brought in their friend Mark Salomon, lead singer of Stavesacre, to add guest vocals, and the appearance of singer-songwriter Alissa Moreno makes “Long Way Down” a haunting duet.
From the swaggering classic-rock groove of “Don’t Lie to Me” to the quirky backwards-Fender-Rhodes solo in “When the World is Mine,” this album is full of great moments. And it all culminates to a crashing finale in the epic album closer, “the Weight,” a song that starts as a hushed tale of pain and regret, but ends as a powerful, soaring rock anthem.
Burn the ships. The title comes from the legend of 16th century explorer Hernando Cortes, who famously ordered his men to burn their ships upon arriving at the New World. No turning back. The Echo Division has found new territory with this album, and it’s a declaration – they won’t be retreating any time soon...
