It has been more than 80 years since the stock market crashed in October of 1929 and set off a chain of events we know as the Great Depression. Throughout the Depression people wrote and sang songs about the things they experienced. Today these songs exist as living history. These songs testify to the grit, endurance and tenacity of these remarkable people who met adversity with honesty, humor, occassionally anger, pride and dignity. These are not the kinds of songs that were meant to take people's minds off their troubles. These are the songs that pulled no punches and told their stories in plain language. Today, as we face our own difficult times, we can take heart from these songs.
