Martin Eden used to be a guy. Now he's a band. ...as tends to happen with solo albums that you then want to try to play live.
After playing drums for a decade in three Boston bands, I got an analog eight-track deck and decided to finally actually learn to play guitar, and pretty soon I ended up with a solo album, if two years can be considered "pretty soon." The whole punk aesthetic deal, too: five chords total used on it drum machine because it's hard to record real drums in a third-floor apartment in Allston etc. etc. So for the album, Martin Eden was me, but for the band, it's nobody. It's like the name "Jethro Tull," although I probably shouldn't use that particular analogy unless I follow it up with DISCLAIMER: We don't sound like Jethro Tull any more than Guided By Voices do. Then I should probably also do a DISCLAIMER: We don't sound like Guided By Voices either. (Getting into at least the same ballpark, though.)
Who does it sound like? I was shooting for a cross between Brian Eno and Died Pretty using Bob Mould's guitar amp I don't know. Anyway, play the album and see who you think it sounds like. Hopefully, it sounds like me. Or us. Whichever. It's hard to think about music right now since the guy in the apartment downstairs from me is playing a '70's station really loud... The songs we're suggesting for radio play are Chuck Jones, Fader and They Give Safe Harbor, but if you like an-other one, cool. (I myself think "Chuck" should be the single but my friends think it should be "Fader.")
The live band has played out a few times as a four-piece, then became a three-piece we're trying to get back to four right now, although we're dumping all the guitar duties on John and still playing gigs. We're also in the midst of recording a new, full-band six-song EP, Evaporation. We also just got the website up and running (sort of...) and are working on getting some reviews of the album, so that this bio sheet won't be by itself in the press kit too much longer.
Cheers, Daren

I was lucky to stumble on this group playing at the Kendall Cafe in Cambridge one night. Got the CD. Love every minute of it.

Hi. We just received a review from Metronome Magazine: Mr. Eden sure is a boisterous fellow and the proof is in the tracks of his new disc 'Devolver'. Charring guitar work blazes throughout the tracks while pulsing rhythms make for clamorous results. It's not your typical fare but one I'm sure will attract a fair share of ardent followers.
