Album Notes

Frontiers and Bridges, performed by the Edinburgh Quartet; Scotland’s only full-time professional string quartet. Three new astonishing works by international composers – from Scotland, China and Thailand
The composers met and became friends while studying composition at Edinburgh University with Prof. Nigel Osborne (an English composer famous mainly for his opera The Electrification of the Soviet Union, Glyndebourne 1987).
Stylistically, the works are best described as “intercultural”.
Although firmly rooted in the western concert tradition, including its modernist phase, all three works on the CD embody elements of other cultures and traditions in an inclusive, non-ironic manner – namely Chinese classical music, British rock music and Buddhist spirituality.
