As a jazz bassist, Edward Pérez has toured throughout New England, Spain, Austria, Poland, Perú, and Chile and shared the stage with jazz luminaries such as Mick Goodrick, George Garzone, Greg Hopkins, and Tony Lujan. His recent recording credits include Mi Ocamba, the soon-to-be-realesed album of cajón great Julio "Chocolate" Algendones.
Edward Pérez began playing bass at the age of 13 with the symphony orchestra in his hometown in southern Texas. Two years later, he left to study music at the Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan, where he graduated as valedictorian, played in the award winning big band (Downbeat Magazine 1994), and received recognition from the NFAA for jazz performance.
Pérez spent his collegiate years and the three years following in Boston, where he concurrently earned a degree from Harvard University and got an education in music in the many jazz clubs of Boston. His frequent appearances in Boston venues included a stretch as the house bassist at Wally´s Jazz Cafe, the five time winner of Best of Boston magazine´s award for best jazz club.
Through his constant quest for fresh influences in his music, Pérez has played a diversity of musical styles including but not limmited to latin jazz, salsa, flamenco, afroperuvian music, bulgarian folk music, rock, pop, and folk. Pérez recently completed a two year residence in Lima, Peru, where he performed and arranged for the most prominent musicians in the city. His own band, Meridiano 75, presented in Lima's international jazz festival 2004.
Edward Pérez is currently based in New York City.
