Jonathan Edwards follows up his "Now and Zen" CD by getting back to his roots playing the drumset with this offering of 10 pieces of dynamic, improvisational, "no boundry" jazz. Mr. Edwards shines on his principle instrument, the drumset; he has developed a very unique style, powering his creativity by utilizing his awesome technique, four-limb independence and wild poly-rhythmic adventures on a four piece SONOR. It's like Tony Williams and Jon Christiansen meet Bill Bruford at a party for Trilok Gurtu. His playing really comes to the forefront in the melodic drum solo on the piece, "Endangered Species" where he solos in a swing 8th, 9/4 Tony-esque exploration with an incredible climax. Jonathan's abilities also shine on "Quodlibetic" and "Oslo" wherein he plays tabla and African log drums, respectively. Jonathan also proves himself a versatile writer authoring three compositions on the CD most notably, "Song for B" a beautiful ballad in the jazz tradition. Long time colleague guitar wizard T Fleisher partners the band with Jonathan. Mr. Fleisher's compositions are some of the best examples of modern jazz around. These are not remakes of old bop tunes like everybody else is recording and touring with; this is real modern jazz. And T never plays a melody; he has his way with it. Think Terje Rypdal/David Torn/Bill Frissell with a modern freshness and melodicism brought to the foray. He is a master of timbre. The group is rounded out by quirky bassist and music academic Andy Seal of the popular Poconos/northeastern PA group, "72 Flood" on acoustic and electric bass. Also, Jonathan's new friend from London electric violinist and philosopher Chris Payne adding his intense, sometimes disturbing, sometimes gentle playing. Special treat: Rob Fried from the popular New England mainstay MAX CREEK sits in and adds congas to a few pieces. To conclude; if you feel wanting for new music lately, this will really bend your ears. T.R.R. for the FVAR
