Album Notes

Reviews for 'On Patrol With The Jazz Police' -

'Elizabeth Geyer's third album re-boots the momentum driven by 'The Dream' where the aesthetic is blurred between an original contemporary jazz edge and a pianist-singer-songwriter sensibility. Her yearning tone adapts to a range of emotions and desires in her lyric.
While much of Geyer's thought provoking poetry is open for personal interpretation, these compositions and arrangements, especially the energetic pieces include qualities of climactic drama and surprise. I didn't want the crescendo of 'A Candle Is Sweeter Than Fire' to end.
Most of her trumpet/flugelhorn acts as improvised gilding but complements the dynamic between Bill Risby's and Jonathan Zwartz's bass.
ABC 'Limelight' Magazine

'Elizabeth Geyer sounds like Elizabeth Geyer. There is no greater
compliment. She's got her own sound and it's beautiful.'
JAMES VALENTINE ABC

' Elizabeth has just released her third and finest album to date ‘On Patrol with the Jazz Police’ to critical acclaim'
www.jazzandbeyond.com.au

'There are two sides to Elizabeth Geyer, who writes, sings and plays trumpet, flugelhorn and piano. She is an aspiring adult pop artist with jazz inflections and a jazz artist with pop leanings ... both work here thanks to a lovely voice and some fine playing by her and a band of excellent jazz musicians'

I became an instant fan of Elizabeth Geyer when I bought ON PATROL WITH THE JAZZ POLICE. For anyone looking for original artists, jazz or otherwise, look no further. This is an excellent CD created by an enormously talented singer/songwriter who sometimes blurs the lines between jazz and pop music. Here, on this CD, you get the best of both worlds. Which I think is the point of the album's title. It's very hard to pick song favorites, but mine are "Beautiful Spiders" which is whimsical and fun. "Middleman" which is a rollicking jazz jab at someone trying to run her life and "Waiting" which swings hard enough to satisfy any jazz purist. Buy a copy of this CD now. As a matter of fact, buy two and give the second one away as a gift to a friend who appreciates great music.

An unforgettable, brilliant collection. Elizabeth Geyer is an enchanting vocalist, superb songwriter, and accomplished musician; I have rarely encountered artists as fine as she. The songs on this CD are magical from every perspective; my favorites are "Elina" - rich and touching with breath-taking arrangement, "Beautiful Spiders" - light & clever, wonderfully catchy lyrics, and "Stunned" - one of the sweetest love songs I've ever heard. This album will make you happy !

This album is already in my lifetime hall of fame, one I will listen to relentlessly for years to come. There are layers of stylistic complexity that suggest influences by a wide variety of other artists, but Elizabeth combines them to make a unique style all her own. I hear lyrical suggestions of Joni Mitchell and Joe Jackson, piano suggestions of Lyle Mays and Chick Corea, horn suggestions of Miles and Hubert Laws. These elements weave in and out like the complex structural elements of a world class wine, demanding that you have another sip to see what comes next. The songs themselves are a wonderful tapestry of character studies and essays on the dynamic tensions in human relationships. The production is fabulous, very well recorded, original arrangements, spot on performances from everyone involved. Bravo, Elizabeth!

For her third and latest album, the lovely Elizabeth Geyer steps into a new realm of songwriting...introspection and personal experience. Honest and brave, these songs evoke the work of Joni Mitchell among others. "Stunned" is at once all Elizabeth's, yet with a sentiment that we can all relate to....reflections of a relationship that wasn't meant to be, but with a perspective that brings a sense of respect instead of regret to the experience. "My truth's no mistake, I'd have missed it and I'm stunned, I can't undo what I've done, My bed's a mess but I'll make it, Bet your life you'll be scribbled all over me." Lyrics this naked are the mark of an honest songwriter who realizes the redemption they bring just by singing them out loud. Words are powerful, and Elizabeth Geyer wields a mighty pen with the last verse: "I could have done without the rain if I'd run, But I'd have never felt the sun." Bravo, beautiful soul! ...and get ready, friends...that's just the first song! The progressive rhythm of "Beautiful Spiders" is next, and what a showcase it is for Elizabeth's musical prowess. I could hear Miles Davis stalking the stage with this wild ride. Other highlights include an ode to true beauty found within the brave face of love that is "Elina"...stirring and emotional imagery that will move you to tears. The virtues of an open mind are explored in "Freefall," which would make an excellent single. Every song on this brilliant album is a personal story that welcomes the listener to share the experience...and in many ways we relate them to our own. Now that is the work of a successful songwriter...to connect with her audience. Elizabeth does, and we're all richer for it. Thankyou for baring and sharing your beautiful soul, Elizabeth Geyer. I can't wait for the next album! by David Witherington
