Album Notes

Over the past five years, Cengiz and I have been involved in a variety of endeavors, including Latin bands, commercials, children's music, and original projects, the last of which is a Middle Eastern jazz CD.

These projects have taken us around town and across the seas. I've been listening to him through and around various rhythm sections from numerous bandstands.
This project trims down the interaction to a dialogue between two players. The material includes eight original compositions by Cengiz, written as a source of stimulation for the musical conversation. We invite you to listen in. - Eldad Tarmu

Distinctive sound, memorable performance

I caught the tune "Orient Circle" on Worcester's WICN, and was intrigued enough to call the DJ. I'm very glad I did, and even more glad I went ahead and purchased it. There's a very different sound to the music on Visits, more evocative of Terry Riley than Lionel Hampton or Gary Burton. Very technical, but without sacrificing either swing or soul, of which these songs have plenty. Subtly informed by third-stream music like Oregon, but jazzier, bluesier. It's very encouraging to know there are people out there still interested in making music like this.

Inspired interplay

From the hard-driving, impelling urgency of "Squint This" to the evocative lyricism of "The Day Before" to the rhythmic diversity of "Orient Circle" and the joyfully infectious "Visits," this collection of eight pieces by Cengiz Yaltkaya provides a solid yet expansive framework for a very synergistic partnership. The inspired interplay between Messrs. Tarmu and Yaltkaya extends to us a much appreciated invitation to join their musical conversation and I, for one, am thoroughly enjoying these "visits" with a pair of fine jazz practitioners. This is unadulterated good stuff!
