Austin based singer/songwriter Elisa Ferrari has been playing guitar and writing songs since she was ten years old. Although she has a background in classical music, she also draws from the many styles heard as a child raised by bohemian Argentines, including Brazilian pop and tango as well as tropicalia, bossa nova, and forro- musical styles that she studied while pursuing her master’s degree in ethnomusicology at the University of Texas at Austin. One can also detect inspiration from the likes of Tom Waits, Neko Case, and Radiohead, some of her favorite artists. Elisa’s songs are full of rich, dense harmonies and syncopated rhythms, highlighted by her dynamic voice that ranges from soothingly angelic to powerfully defiant. Her lyrics often lie between fantasy like constellations of tales of love, life, decision, and biting political critiques pushing for social awareness in today’s cultural climate.

Elisa calls her music "dark", but actually it is very refreshing. She uses minor keys and slightly "off color" scales which add the "dark" tone to the music, but that is what makes her music unique. She has a very sweet voice and the use of bowed strings and a gentle rocking rhythm, her music is very comfortable and could sooth a restless child. And the album is appropriately titled, Island of Children. It is good to see independent creative artists like this take their music directly to the listeners and bypass the "music gate keepers" who try to define and control music for their own profits. I highly recommend this album to anyone who likes to exercise their musical taste. They will be in for a pleasant surprise.
