Album Notes

Elk City was picked by the New York Times as one of the four best bands in New Jersey! (Nov. 14, 1999)

There is something unlikely and captivating about Elk City - a New York City three-piece with Velvet Underground sonics and Jefferson Airplane spirit.

Their music, dubbed Prairie Pop by one reviewer, conjures images of wide-open spaces seen longingly through urban eyes.

Elk City turns opposing forces into compliments - singer/bassist Renne Lobue and singer/guitarist Peter Langland-Hassan bring dueling yet complimentary vocal melodies to each song. While Renee hovers in ethereal realms common to PJ Harvey and Mazzy Star, Peter grounds the songs in the calls-it-as-he-sees-it tradition of Lou Reed and Jonathan Richman.

Drummer/producer Ray Ketchem brings invaluable creativity and experience to Elk City. His productions credits include BETHLEHEm (Bar/None) by the legendary garage rock band The Original Sins, and Smoke Machine (Bar/None) by one of the original Elephant 6 bands, Chocolate USA.

Elk City has now finished its first EP, Dreams of Steam, released on its own label StarrySky. The four songs are fine examples of the way Elk City takes pop music to places it has never gone but always been.
