The Jeopardy Of Circumstance

by Carrie Elkin

With the fire of Patty Griffin and the rawness of Rickie Lee Jones, Carrie Elkin's songs are, at once, intimate yet universal, naked yet richly adorned. The Jeopardy of Circumstance is an irresistibly joyful and spontaneous recording.

ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Reviewers say:

"If human auras were visible, Elkin would have had a blue buzz of electricity surrounding her body, and sparks would have been flying. If she hadn't been anchored to some veteran side men...her feet might have left the ground... If Elkin can come across with the kind of stage presence she showed Saturday night on a regular basis, she's going to achieve widespread acclaim....she is a serious songwriter and a gifted vocalist...Elkin is going places. Just wait and see."
Tom Ross Steamboat Pilot

"Very few people in this world can captivate an audience with just a voice and a guitar the way Carrie Elkin can."
Matthew Toledo Athens Musicians Network

"Live, Carrie Elkin displays one of the most powerful female voices in the area, and her charming, unaffected stage presence nicely offsets her vocal mix of husky alto underpinnings and piercing soprano overtones....This is definitely a star to watch...."
Brian Lisik Cleveland Scene Magazine

I put this cd in my car to listen to as I drove and before I knew it I was pulled over to sit and just listen. It is truly beautiful and the lyrics pull you in as you follow the stories and images, happy and sad. When it ends, you have no choice but to play it again.
It is simple beauty with a splash of country.
All we can do is listen and wait for more.

Beautiful!
Ahhhhhhh......Carrie, you've done it again. Each time better and better! Can't wait to see you perform live on stage!

Great stuff!
I've had the pleasure of listening to Carrie's melodic voice on and off over the last 15 years, and if you haven’t heard it, do yourself a favor and pick up this album. I would call it her best yet. You can really feel her love of the music, and a few tracks give you a glimpse of just what a fun gal I think she always is. Well done, Carrie, and I hope to see you touring the North Coast sometime soon.

WOW. What a voice. I walk around singing Questions about Angels to myself all the time. Her lyrics are powerful - and how can someone that tiny emit that amazing of a sound? I'm impressed.

The Jeopardy of Circumstance
I put on "The Jeopardy of Circumstance" and I find myself sliding down a clear, invigorating waterway through a canyon: a refreshing, cool ride through the hot, unforgiving landscape that is the desert of human emotion. Carrie's voice soothes me while her lyrics wrap me in the arms of a friend who assures me I'll be alright, somehow, after I move through the pain, provided I remember to kick up my heels on the dance floor that is the lush forest of human joy and jubilation, powered by love.
I hear the idea of the Jeopardy of Circumstance in the way Carrie juxtaposes melancholy lyrics with gleeful melodies in “Broke TV” and conversely, the hopeful message of the words in “Obadiah” against the background of its sorrowful and sparse composition and the matter of fact sweetness of the melody in “Black Lung” is counterintuitive to the somber tone of the story told. The toe-tapping bounce of “Shell of a Man” makes heartbreak seem like the down on a rollercoaster when I put up my hands and enjoy the rush of the ride. And the emptiness of leaving home is filled with the comfort of noticing the offerings at my current station in “Ode to Ogallala”. On each individual excursion, my boat is carried by the rich soulful breeze of Carrie’s voice in the sail.
Golly, thank you for this album Carrie! Anyone on this voyage called life would do well to include some Carrie Elkin in his/her suitcase.

Amazing Grace and Whiskey
Throughout our lives, we are exposed to situations that seem beyond our control. Destiny or fate feels bigger than our efforts. And sometimes our choices don’t feel like choices at all. What do we do? Do we fight? Or accept? Or do we just resign to the wonder and mystery of it all? The characters, in the aptly titled "The Jeopardy of Circumstance", are confronted by predicaments, and reflect these choices.
Like many great lyricists, Carrie allows the song’s characters to frame her questions and divulge her emotions. The writing is mature, personal, and also prismatic enough to allow the listener their perspective. I hear regardful echoes of Tom Joad Springsteen.
Musically, this album is Americana slanted to the country side. However, the production is as much atmospheric resonance and subdued bellowing that expands and contracts with the breadth of the song, as it is Texas twang.
Miss Elkin’s soft and sweet singing draws you in. The real treat, however, is when her voice opens up to reveal a singer who sounds like she swills whiskey on Saturdays and belts Amazing Grace on Sundays. This is Americana at its best.
