Album Notes

Album Description:

Guitarist El McMeen "breaks out" into some new musical directions with this 2002 solo guitar release. In addition to his trademark lyrical treatment of melodic pieces, this disc contains powerful renditions of three original compositions, and some uptempo dance tunes, and even a medley of pop tunes made famous by such groups as the Four Tops and the Temptations.

Editorial Reviews:

Bernard Richter, Minor 7th Webzine, Sept/Oct, 2002
Striking, dynamic and evocative...[Greensleeves is] exquisite...spectacular

Michael Tearson, Sing Out!, Fall, 2002
...gorgeous tone, command and timing...a delicious album.

Gene Zasadinski, strummeronline.com, 7/02
El McMeen breaks out ...in a rash of creativity, exuberance, and virtuosity.

Music:

El's music is characterized by lyrical beauty and a sensitivity to melodic phrases enhanced with tasteful arpeggios, cross-picking, and walking bass lines, and his uptempo pieces evidence energy and pulse. His artistry has been praised by numerous publications, including Acoustic Guitar Magazine, Fingerstyle Guitar Magazine and Guitar Player Magazine. El's music has been hailed by critics as "stirring ... unbridled acoustic beauty" and "drop-dead gorgeous" (Guitar Player Magazine) and as a "treasure" (Dirty Linen Magazine).

An outstanding collection of arrangements and compositions, Greensleeves being this reviewer's highlight - a lush evocative piece worth the price of this album alone. My only criticism, and why i've given it 4 stars rather than the perfect 5, is the inclusion of the Motown medley, which for me, not a fan of soul music, slightly spoilt the feel of the continuity of the album. It won't stop me buying other CD's by El though!!
