ABOUT MANZANILLA
Manzanilla is the name of a vast, untamed beach in Trinidad, uniquely characterised by miles of coconut trees and stretches of multi-coloured prayer flags. Manzanilla, on account of its raw, open character, has been a great source of inspiration and transformation for Elspeth. Her second instrumental CD, "Manzanilla", is an ode to that place which, to her, is "not just a place. It's a state of being."

All music on this CD was created by Elspeth on her Roland XP-50 workstation keyboard (with World Expansion).

ABOUT MUSIC FOR THE MOVIE OF YOUR MIND
Whenever people would ask Elspeth to describe her music, she never really knew what to say. Finding it difficult to slot something as fluid and ever-changing as her music into existing categories (although, the way the world works, sometimes we "have" to), she decided to make up her own genres. She refers to her acoustic guitar/vocal renditions as "Acoustic Folk Mantras" and her instrumental electronic music as "Music for the Movie of your Mind". In performance, she has used "Music for the Movie of your Mind" to create an interactive experience for her audience. She asks the audience to close their eyes, and the closed eyelids become each person's "screen" for the visuals that her music inspires.

For a more traditional (rather than coined) definition of Elspeth's music: it spans the spectrum of New Age-Alternative-Folk-Rock-Soundtrack-Conscious-Mood.

****************

Elspeth's four CDs to date are:
1. MOVING PICTURES (2000) - music for the movie of your mind
2. MANZANILLA (2001) - music for the movie of your mind
3. INFINITE (2002) - Acoustic folk mantras
4. WAITING FOR ELAINE (2004) - Music for the movie of your mind

Incredible Caribbean Electronica
author: Sarina

Wonderful Caribbean soundscape. This CD fuses a myriad of cultural influences into a seamless and unique interpretation of what is too often a soulless genre (electronica).

sandy beach meets outer space;personalised fengshui; workshop yuh life styled in
author: Joanne Johnson www.caribbeanchildren.com

Some would think that a wild beach on the East coast of the Caribbean's southern most island, Trinidad, is the furthest place from the ethereal tones of cosmic space heard in this volume. Yet to know Manzanilla is to know that this music is as much of the beach as the calypso and Soca so readily associated with our West Indian culture. If there is one Caribbean artist capable of inventing some new fangled creative perspective, Duncan is it; and Manzanilla (indeed, all her Movie for the Mind volumes)is the primordial sound track. More than music, Manzanilla feels to me like shades and tones. Sounding at times, more like a child at play than the studied accomplishment of a musician; like the kind of personal feng shui you and I could create with a Roland if we took the time - How many of us do? I like that this music inspires me to create in the workshop of my own life.

At first I was in my apartment listening..... but then.....

Was the CD inspired by Manzanilla or does the CD create a Manzanilla? At first I knew I was in my apartment listening to the sounds... but then I wasn’t sure, things changed, images came, some fast, some slow. It was as if I was here and somewhere else at the same time… I am not sure where, it's all hazy now that I am in my Waking state. The sounds... many sounds ... seemed to come from all directions, even through me... bringing many different realities with their sound vibrations. I was in ‘Manzanilla’ wherever that may be, whether real or make believe... and I will go there again some day soon...

This music infuses me with the magic of Manzanilla. Haunting!

The cd really captures the mystery and majesty of Manzanilla and carries me back to my often weekly drives back and forth on that stretch. Like the drive along the coconut road, the music is extremely theraputic and enjoyable.
