Album Notes

Emi Jarvi and J Carmichael have been writing and performing together for almost five years. J and Emi began working together when she moved to England and they became intrigued by each other's talent. However, the musical similarities end there. His guitar-playing background of electronic and rock music mixed with her vocal folk/blue-grass upbringing brewed an eclectic musical taste. Emi returned to America after two years in England but saw J often and they continued to write together in spite of the distance. Over the years, the fusion of the genres became addictive and lead to the release of their Debut album, BlueStar Café.

J Carmichael brings his knowledge of electronic music and alternative rock to the album. He's been in many bands over the years and has produced countless electronic tracks that have been used both in live theater and film. His lyrics are poetic and steeped in metaphor. Every instrument on the album (aside from the mandolin) is played by J. He is also the creator of every moment of distortion, reversed keyboard and he loves to resolve the final note of the melody because "it's so satisfying".

Emi Jarvi was raised in a folk household. She was in a band with her family for roughly four years in which she played the mandolin and harmonized with her mom, dad and brother in ways that only genetics allow. She has performed in many venues and in many areas; from Texas to Boston to England to Chicago...the list goes on. Her lyrics are honest because "that's how [she] feels" and she "wants music to be accessible". All vocal and mandolin tracks on the album are by Emi. She is the creator of every suspension, vocal harmony and she prefers to leave the final note of a melody unresolved...especially if the story being told isn't over.

Emi recently moved to England in September 2004 and has begun work on her second album with J. Follow their progress at Take1Records.co.uk or at the newly released website, EmiJarvi.com.

BAD ASS!!!
author: George Murphy
I have never heard anything like this cd. The mix of folk/rock/electronica is completely inspired. It's like one of those cd's where if you hear one of the songs on the radio you have to by the cd or go slowly and systematically insane. I dig the attention to the quality of production and the hidden levels that don't show themselves until the 2nd or 3rd listening. It gives me this image in my mind that J must be hunched over his computer, with his hands over his headphones, straining to find that one last thing the song is missing and then NAILING IT. Emi has the kind of voice that draws you in completely and makes you forget about everything else. Her words give the impression that the soul of the listener has finally found it's voice, and has a pension for beautiful melodies. Word to the wise, be cautious when listening to this cd while driving. You may get too hypnotized to stay in your lane, or too emotional to see clearly.

Great, original singer and songs
author: Paul Nash
I heard "The Last Day" some time ago and came across this CD when searching for it. The rest of the tracks confirm my feeling that Emi is a great singer and that the songs -- her collaborator J Carmichael deserves credit -- are also outstanding. Emi can sing in a straight pop style but avoids some common affectations and sometimes uses a pure soprano approach that is refreshing and effective. For me she recalls Joni Mitchell without being an imitator. Very well recorded and arranged CD too. All the tracks are better than most of what I hear elsewhere!

This CD shows off the diversity of the most gifted young vocalist I have ever heard. From the hard driving GET UP to the mellow ballad COUNT ON YOU. Emi is simply awesome!! J, who does all the instrumentals, except Mandolin, and recorded this project is equally impressive. He is tasteful and keeps it interesting without overdoing it. I especially like his refreshing style of sequencing drum parts and his use of backward sounds. Highlights for me are "UNDER" with its hauntingly lyrical melody and J's electronic instrumental "INTERLUDE".
