notes
Emily Elbert’s music is jazz-infused folk with a lot of soul, and a fresh, hip perspective. The Coppell, Texas native has delighted listeners from coast to coast with her award-winning originals and her unique arrangements of classic favorites. At age 19, she has an in-depth knowledge of tunes most grandmothers would love.
Admiration for jazz, blues, reggae, folk, soul, and world music shape the styles she writes and performs. Emily says, “I love music from around the world and like to blend a variety of musical genres into a style that is all my own.”
A third-generation musician, Emily is a singer/songwriter with deep musical roots, who is driven by a passionate love for music and creative expression. She uses unique guitar riffs, chord voicings, and soulful singing to create distinctive vocal and guitar arrangements.
As a child, Emily studied classical music and competed in piano contests for seven years. She picked up guitar and began singing in eighth grade. In high school choir and summer programs at The University of North Texas and the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, Emily sang a variety of styles, from Renaissance to show choir and jazz to reggae.
Emily began performing professionally in high school in order to earn her way to Berklee’s summer program in Boston. As a high school junior, she recorded eleven original songs on her debut CD, Bright Side, which she wrote, arranged, performed, and co-produced. Once she got to Berklee, she was selected as a winner of the Performing Songwriter’s Contest. By the end of 2006, after just seven months as a professional performer, music critics at The Dallas Morning News selected Emily as “Local Rookie of the Year” for 2006.
Her senior year in high school, Emily played over fifty gigs – at coffeehouses, festivals, benefits, guitar bars, resorts, and house concerts. Before graduation, the young musician won numerous awards, including being selected for the 2007 Gibson/Baldwin Grammy Jazz Ensemble. As an ensemble winner, she studied and performed for 10 days with legendary jazzers in Los Angeles during Grammy week.
On her 18th birthday, Emily licensed videos of two of her songs to Texas Instruments, to demonstrate their new video cell phones throughout the U. S., Europe, and Asia.
Later that year, Emily also won First Place at the Old Settlers Music Festival Youth Talent Competition in Dripping Springs, Texas and was Grand Prize Winner in Texas Music Project’s Texas 10 Under 20 Contest in Dallas. She was the musical guest on numerous television and radio shows, including repeat performances on WFAA-TV’s Good Morning Texas.
After graduating high school, Emily spent the summer performing in venues from Alaska to Houston to New York City. Last August, Emily jumped into the Boston music scene, where she attends Berklee College of Music as a professional music major. She sings with Berklee’s Bob Marley Ensemble and performs with a trio and as a solo artist. She also sings with the funk band, Captain Coconut, in New York City.
In 2008, Emily was a featured performer at the North American Folk Music Alliance conference in Memphis, toured with G Love & Special Sauce, the Wood Brothers, and Kaki King. She has opened for Patty Larkin, Sara Hickman, Ben Taylor, Ruthie Foster, Marcia Ball, Tracy Grammer, and Brooks Williams. She has co-billed with Anthony da Costa, Chris O’Brien, and the Powder Kegs. She was recently selected as a Kerrville New Folk Finalist for 2008.
This summer, Emily has been invited to play at Taste Addison, Old Settlers Music Festival, Kerrville Folk Festival, the Woody Guthrie Festival, and the Boston Folk Festival.

Cannot stop listening to Bright Side
author: AlyssaI discovered Emily Elbert on youtube like we discover so many people. But she is something totally different and fresh compared to any young artist I have heard. I just can't get enough of her album and can't wait for another from her!!
Fantastic New Artist
author: Rene'Emily is very talented, and I highly recommend this album. She has a natural voice--soft, clear, and expressive. Reminds me a little of Norah Jones at times, but more on the folk side. The melodies are beautiful, and her songs just make you feel good. Every track on this CD is a gem. Emily, stay true to yourself, and continue to be original. Can't wait to see how you grow as an artist, and look forward to your next album!
Loved it!

I heard Emily on Whole Wheat Radio, an internet radio station out of Talkeetna, Alaska. I live in Alaska and I haven't heard an artist this good since Joss Stone! (Better than Jewel) I would like to hear her play with Johnny Lang! I think they would be a great match just like him and Shannon Curfman. She was short-lived, but I still have her album and love it.

They didn't call her "rookie of the year in Dallas for nothing!!" She earned i
author: JerriThis is the kind of music I like to wake up to, play again while I get ready for work, listen to it on my way to work, and turn it on again when I read my book at night! Am I addicted to the music and the lyrics of this "rookie of the year in Dallas? "Yep, you could say that!!!" No wonder she made it to the Grammy's. More, more, Miss Emily Elbert! Someone told me she made the "cover" on "Music News" in Houston!! Wow! Great lyrics! Great CD. For a singer, songwriter, guitar player, this young lady has got it "going on!"
what a lovely CD.
author: Paul d'AoustI bought this album on the virtue of the three demo songs Emily has on her MySpace page. I'd have to say the rest of the songs are just as good, which is a rare thing. These songs expose a level of wisdom, sensitivity, and depth that is unexpected from a person as young as she is. ('Garden of the Sun' is a favourite of mine.) As for musical style? I hate to draw comparisons, but she has all the best aspects of Jack Johnson.
What a great and efficent website.
author: KimI sent this CD to my niece in Utah. She loved it. So I think that she will be known world wide. Thank you CD BABY websit for making it so easy to to. I also loved your follow-up.
Great stuff!!!

GREAT CD!!!
author: Kim WilliamsEmilys cd is wonderful ... as soon as I heard on T.V. one morning .. I just had to find her cd... She has a great voice and has a very bright future! Good Luck!
Really Lovely. . .
author: KylaMs. Elbert does wonderful, beautiful things with her talent on this CD. I would say for someone so young, but she's good. Period. There are many much older than she that don't have such range and appreciation for music. She'll only get better. Here I break the rules and write about the artist in general. Not only that. . .she's a nice kid. I sent her a message on My Space and she wrote back in very polite and appreciative form. That type of heart and humility shows in her music as well.
My new favortie CD
author: JenI really like finding new talent and listening to something other than the narrow scope of the radio, which is why I was so happy to discover Emily on a local morning show. I ordered her CD that same day and am very pleased. She's clearly very talented and her music is unique. The Bright Side is the only CD I've been listening to in my car for weeks.
Emily is an old soul in a young body...
author: Theresa PowellEmily is an old soul in a young body. I was blown away by her talent and voice while watching a morning show today. Such written words of wisdom sang in a beautiful voice with great guitar! WOW! The world will hear more of this bright young star for years to come. Another peace messenger from the Heavens! I am ordering the CD.

A unique view on life’s simple joys that often get taken for granted
author: Brennan BiceWith all the craziness of life’s day to day mundane activities, we often forget the simple joys of life like walking through the park and enjoying the sunshine. Bright Side is an escape from the “Real World” and a chance to look at life from a unique perspective. Emily is talented far beyond her years. Her style is completely original and can not be duplicated. This is just the beginning of many albums to come.
Wonderful talent!! Emily's music is great and lyrics are amazing!
author: Phyllis JacobI love Emily's Bright Side CD! The music is incredible and her unique style appeals to all ages. I thought her lyrics were very special too. I could picture everything she wrote about!
The Texas singer/songwriter may not be well known yet.....
author: HarderBeat.comEmily Elbert - Bright Side, Full Sun Records In the mood for some Nora Jones? How about some Joss Stone? Maybe a bit of Emily Elbert? Wait a minute, the first two are household names, but that last one? The Texas singer/songwriter may not be well known yet, but the eleven songs on her debut album are just as beautiful and deep as her internationally known peers. The whole soft-spoken, folkie, jazzy, poppy, female singer/songwriter thing has been done a million times before, but Emily’s spin on things is a breath of fresh air. Tracks like “Take It Easy” and “Here” feel like a modern day Edie Brickell. “Bright Side” and “I Feel Fine” are more like the female version of Jack Johnson. Either comparison puts her in great company. Bright Side is proof that those who prefer slower paced music can find plenty to love right here in Texas. (Jason Janik) Harder Beat, Flipside: An Inside Look at D/FW’s alternative scene.

author: Janice Brown"Bright Side" brightens my day! Your lilting voice has beautiful pitch. They say talent runs in the family, and I think you have proved it. Your debut CD is filled with infectious, light-hearted, enthusiastic energy. To me, your music is downright addictive! Keep it coming!! Your rich, melodic voice and your original music proves what a serious musician you are. And to think you've only just begun! Bravo! So here you have my "rave review."
