Album Notes

Big soul. The Owen Township native started singing and playing the piano at age 7. She is releasing two records in 2008: “A Cache In The Warehouse Floor” and "Daytime Fireflies." Never ceasing to deliver cutting lyrics and punchy vocals, the wordsmith writes with an honesty that belies her age.

Her previous releases include 2005: Lines, 2006: Potent One, The Barefoot Session, 2007: Love In Flats. Traces of Hoagy Carmichael, Otis Redding, Janis Joplin, Tom Waits, and Solomon Burke float through her records as they surely floated through her childhood. Still, Hurd’s live show is the best way to catch her.

Love in Flats
author: Lani Richardson

I put on “Love in Flats” and I’m lying on a blanket on the grass with aspens blowing in the breeze over my head. My lover is beside me; we have a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc, some seedless grapes, a bit of brie and some crisp apples. My lover walks away but the memory remains and I savor the moment. Though the scene I’m in is one of love lost, a broken heart, the emotion that envelops me is the giddy, fulfilling, exciting rush of new love. Emily’s voice is rich and layered; it’s savory: a brandy cheesecake with a dark coffee or key lime pie with a cognac in front of a cozy fire at a winter cabin, curled under a blanket with a romantic novel by a great writer. The rhythm is infectious like when I find a good move on the dance floor: one that just feels right. As others are watching with envy and desire, I grab hold of my partner’s hand and we saunter off into the moonlight, down a long winding beach, warm waves flirting with my ankles. I clench my teeth with a solid grip on the reigns of a fast horse racing through the underbrush of a pine forest, racing to shelter before the thunder strikes. Emily Hurd’s music tugs at my heart and reminds me of all the blissful moments in my life with a longing that just feels so damn good. The CD ends and I put it on again, anxious to feel so deeply again. Thank you Emily; I am grateful for the feelings your music elicits: the passion that is love and life. “There’s something easy in the way that you please me…Oh come meet the dawn with your evening clothes on…Tonight’s got a life of its own besides you…There’s something holy in the way that you hold me…Tonight I could be baptized by you…” – Evening Clothes by Emily Hurd
