Album Notes

From the time that my mother began singing to me before I was born, I've always loved music. While neither of my parents are professional musicians, they both sing and play instruments, and family time together always includes music making, even now that my brother and I are grown (both of us performing musicians.) For years, my mother sang me a new song every day. There were songs for brushing teeth, washing hands, putting on a seat belt, blessing a meal, riding on a swing, taking a hike, riding in the car, just for the joy of it, and of course, for bedtime. My hope in sharing "Lullabies from Emilyn" is not simply that you will enjoy the album, but that you'll sing the songs without me, too!

When I was little, my brother and I got to choose one story and three songs at bedtime. These are some of the songs our parents sang. I recorded them in folk style: one take, usually the first take, one mic, in my bedroom. Singing doesn’t need to be perfect; please sing along! I hope these songs will soothe tired children and parents. While all the songs on here are appropriate for children, they are not "kids music," and can be enjoyed by anyone. I also snuck an original song onto the album, "This Sky," written as a wedding song.
