This 3-song ep is essentially three singles without an album home.
The first is the rocker, Jagged Life. Initially written as a theme song for the NBC show "Mercy", the tune (a collaboration with Art Hays) grew its own legs and stepped out as a testament to strong women who battle the grind, reach for success and do it every day because its their calling. It's a celebration of those who take on the "jagged life" to help others and try to make the world a little better.
Next up is the quiet and contemplative Magic. It's a heartfelt song about star-crossed lovers and dedicated to anyone who's recognized love's connection and sacrificed it to avoid hurting others in the way. A favorite song in live shows, Emily produced this recording of Magic with good friend and former bandmate, Irakli Gaprindashvili, who claims to have loved the song from first hearing it at the late night open mic at Three of Cups Lounge in NYC.
Third on the ep is Janaina. Originally recorded for release on the album, You Had Me At Goodbye, Janaina is a lullaby written for a little girl. In the song, the singer projects all the highs and lows the child has yet to embrace in her life, and in the process, implores the child for a bit of hope in seeing her own life, which appears to be tinged with a bit of the blues. It's the beauty of youth and innocence being admired by age and wisdom. Both have something to give and receive.
