Indie space rock at it's finest. Huge guitars, sweeping keyboards, and distorted basslines set the backdrop for sharp, unconventional lyrics. Keen-eyed and surprising, they're worth your attention.

"...the amazing ability to bridge the best parts of early college radio rock with modern pop experimentation. Highly recommended for anybody who remembers when 'alternative' meant something."
- Phoenix New Times album review

Emperors of Japan bring their unique blend of indie-space rock back to the forefront with their second full-length album, Activator. Influenced by bands like Radiohead, Queens of the Stone Age, Death From Above 1979, the Pixies, Secret Machines, Menomena, Smashing Pumpkins, and Broken Social Scene, the Emperors layer their music with huge guitars, distorted bass, and sweeping keyboards.

Much like this Phoenix band's debut – 2006’s Your Freak Majesty – Activator is a sonically experimental chunk of space rock. The Emperors incorporate quirky pop sensibility into an album charged with both rock and electronic influences. Lyrically, they take aim at politics, religion, and society with songs like “The Jesus Bee” and “Teenage Girls In Heat” – which contrary to it’s title is actually about the proliferation of 40 year old men with MySpace accounts. “Cadillactation” marries raw bass and drums with radioactive keyboard flourishes, and “FIGHTSONG!” is a driving anti-violence anthem.

Emperors of Japan tour regularly throughout the U.S. Complete tour schedules, along with album reviews, photos, blogs, and general misinformation about the band can be found online at www.emperorsofjapan.com or www.myspace.com/emperorsofjapan.
