Ennio
- a bio -

I could have started this bio off pretending to be someone else, speaking about myself as though I'm the next biggest thing since sliced bread, but come on...sliced bread? No way am I going to beat sliced bread. I am not the 'next biggest thing', because there will never be a 'next biggest thing'. What I am is a rare breed: a talented, passionate, singer/songwriter with an eye for life.
I have taught myself everything in regards to music and musical compositions. I have learned through years of observation, what it takes to be a true artist with enough staying power to satiate the needs and desires of my fans. I am not interested in being a one-hit wonder. I am not interested in being jazzed up by glamour and clothes and flashy, polished, over-produced instruments. I am in love with music and all of its glory.
Music has been dying. In an age of war and death, technology and religion, pop stars and conglomerates, music is slowly becoming something that the poets are no longer a part of on a mass scale. We are being led, by the hand, into a world of complex emotions, by the bright sunny pop stars who insult everyone's intelligence. But I digress. This does not tell you about me.
I have been playing guitar since I was 16 and writing long before that. I sing about love, relationships, friends, enemies, politics, religion, sexuality, sex...basically anything that finds its way into my head. I have had many a show throughout Toronto, slowly, but surely building a solid fan base throughout the university crowds. I have opened up for Sam Roberts, as well as playing shows at The Rivoli, the 360, Holy Joe's, Lee's Palace, The Reverb, Healey's and countless small coffee shops throughout this marvelous city. I am a featured artist on the Independent internet radio station NewRotation.com, where they play my songs "Enemy", "going down", and "hey, Jesus" on heavy rotation. I have just finished recording a full-length album, oh so carefully and lovingly in my bedroom, of which these songs are featured. The album is called "Yellowbrick" and it traces the first stages of my life. My departure from religion; my love-hate relationship with the village; my love/sex experiences; my self-awareness and sorrow; and finally my declarations and principles. My songs are testaments to the world I am observing and living in every day. I hope you like them.
Thank you for listening.

"Yellowbrick" is a step into the highly unapproached concept album
In an industry obsessed with “singles”, it’s reassuring to hear a songwriter who still chooses to present his music as a collective work that’s meant to be heard together. Yellowbrick is still laced with “singles” -like ‘Enemy’, ‘Hey Jesus’, and ‘Going Down,’ mixed in with a few other gems like “Trash” and ‘Around.’ A definite highlight of this disc comes in early at track 2. ‘Hey Jesus’ glows, despite the weight of its mood. It’s perfectly complete as an acoustic song. I’m not usually fond of slower, emotion heavy acoustic tunes, but this one’s got a real honesty to it that comes through best without a full band arrangement. The backing vocals by Caroline Brooks are something to look out for. So what’s the concept, you ask? I guess you can have a glance at the track-listing, and sort some of it out. “Yellowbrick” is a reference to that unpredictable and sometimes treacherous road from The Wizard of Oz.

Through your earphones - under your skin
This album is a drug. You will keep on listening to these songs of passion again and again.

Emotive, intelligent, and enjoyably idiosyncratic antidote to formulaic music
This is the most exciting new find I have come across in a long, long time. This album contains a diversity of sentiments and moods but is consistently heartfelt. The lyrics are witty and admirably scabrous,at moments.Pride seems to be the perfect anthem for queers alienated by mainstream queer culture. Also,I love the way short, stark songs are interspersed among the other tracks. This album is a refreshing blend of penetrative intimacy and social commentary

Personal, Intelligent, A journey worth taking
It is funny when I first got this CD I thought "this is good", BUT after playing it several times I started to really appreciate the lyrics, the composition, the music and the talent. Definitly one of my favorites now!!! Brandon Shea, Artist, www.brandonshea.com

Fantastic singer/songwriter that does it all!
Ennio seems to have the bravery to truly speak his mind. His music is a refreshing taste from all the factory made music we're hearing on the radio all the time. Definitely worth the purchase.

Lions and tigers and bears - Oh my!
This is actually the third Ennio CD I've bought, and once again I have not been dissappointed. There are some truly spectacular songs on this little collection, including Church St. (which just might me my favourite Ennio tune EVER!), Trash, Around, Pride, and Hey, Jesus. The album is sprinkled with several little songs which may only be a minute or two long, but still are able to convey a very heavy message. The most prominent one to me is "Big Boy Now" - to which I can certainly relate, hehe. "Small Love Song" is very cute, as is "I Love Boy Bands", which I am still not quite sure what I think of. The bonus disc is stuffed with some very delightful goodies as well, including several delicious renditions of the songs on the album. I'm still not quite sure if I am entirely following the Oz theme in these albums (I was a huge Oz fanatic as a child) - I'm only finding a few songs on each album that have any sort of reference to the beloved fantasy series, such as "Emerald City" and "There's No Place Like Home". I suppose I can somewhat see the metaphor, but even still it's a fun theme to go on since Oz is so close to home for me. Anyways, this album is very fantabulous, and if you enjoy it, you should definitely check out the next one in the trilogy: Oz.

A tender chronicle of a necessary journey behind the spell of soothing acoustics
Don’t be deceived! This is not soft rock, pop, easy listening or folk. Behind the mask of seductive acoustic melodies and soothing vocalizations is the tender chronicle of the songwriter’s journey down the Yellowbrick Road. Be they personal or retold events, each song is a step further along a lonely journey of self-discovery that we don’t make out of choice but out of necessity. The narratives of each song and how they connect as a whole is what makes this album a 'complete' work and stand out amongst any of its contemporaries. Much like in the old days of vinyl, you are compelled to listen to the 'whole' work from beginning to end. However, upon arrival at the Emerald City, the journey may be complete but the real adventure begins as another tale must unfold. The sorrowful and heartfelt melodies are the hook for the astute listener but it is the lyrics, the poet’s words, which make the intelligent listener return and the weeping soul empathize.

Terrific singer/songwriter
I liked the samples I heard on this site, but when I bought this CD I got a much better sense of Ennio's diversity as a singer/songwriter. The music has an introspective side, and his vocals can be plaintive and melancholic. But some of the songs are uptempo and humorous as well. A cool queer perspective not heard often enough, I loved this CD and am looking forward to Oz.

Ennio music
Ennio’s “Yellowbrick” is an album with much to appreciate. Subtle, confessional and honest, it soothes with emotional recognition, making for life enhancing listening. The rewards accumulate with repeated play, and once you’ve slipped on your earphones it’s hard to escape the emotional web he weaves. The set ends perfectly with the longing “Emerald City”.

The seconds disc, “Redbrick”, is a great bonus, providing sublime alternate takes of “Yellowbrick” favorites such as “Church St.”, “Trash” and “I love boy bands” (although I think the “Yellowbrick” version of last mentioned song has a much more immediate impact). The rest of the album is laced with similar introspective gems, and ends off with an inspired live version of “Around”. It’s probably a good idea to get acquainted with “Yellowbrick” first, though.
