Album Notes

Ephemeris is a 3-piece rock band, based out of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The taste for simple rock and roll is something to keep you moving, as lead singer Nicole's sultry voice and ironic lyrics, bring you down into her dark world with tales of love, addiction, and the greed and dirty deeds of those who think they have it all.

In their short existance as a band, Ephemeris has managed to play all around Pittsburgh, with both well known local acts and touring bands. In February 2004, they called Jim Hufnagel, to record their first EP, "Love at First Fight". The CD was recorded and mastered by Jim Hufnagel, and produced by Jim Hufnagel and Ephemeris.

Please check out our brother band, "Nona", at www.geocities.com/thebandnona. Their debut cd "Her Eyes Ablaze with Summer Flowers" is also available on Cdbaby.com.

Ephemeris may just be your cup of tea if you are into rough, jagged rock music.

Ephemeris/Love At First Fight EP Ephemeris may just be your cup of tea if you are into rough, jagged rock music. Ephemeris is a three piece from my hometown, Pittsburgh , and is made up of Jesse Levi on drums, Nicole R on vocals, and Phil Anderson on guitars. I am biased being from Pittsburgh , with my bias leaning in the negative direction. Most Pittsburgh bands are simply painful to listen to and can’t write a decent song. There are exceptions such as The Modey Lemon, but if you go to a local show you are almost inspired to learn an instrument due to the feeling in your brain that you could do a better job. Ephemeris surprised me with their six song EP, that contains moments that are capable of sneaking up on you causing you to rock before you even know it. The strongest moments on the album are “Tea With The Queen” and “Lay Off.” Nicole has vocals that can go from childish yell to a dark, droning scream in an instant. “Tea With The Queen,” contains imagery of poverty and riches with lines “Roll with the bag lady/And have tea with the queen.” The tone in the vocals switches frequently and it sounds like early Sleater-Kinney without the banshee wailing element. Three minutes in, the song drifts into a hazy, down tempo territory that will make you think you are on the next track. Nope, as the guitars punch in and everything is sped up once again. “Lay Off” contains a notable PJ Harvey influence, and works better than anything on the EP as the song alternates between Nicole’s vocals sounding distant and alone to fierce and confident. The energy pulses on the track, which is slightly under three minutes, a length that prevents you from becoming bored. Ephemeris has promise and could end up as being one of the stronger bands in Pittsburgh . Adding a band member or two may expand their sound as well as their fan base, as you sense their aims for their songs are greater than three members can handle. If you are from Pittsburgh and are into keeping tabs on local music, then buying this album is a no brainer. For those who like harder rock like the Deftones or PJ Harvey, check it out.
