"Swirl" is the colorful new follow up album to Epicycle's critically acclaimed 1998 CD "Orange". For the past five years the band (brothers Ellis & Tom Clark) have been developing a reputation for co-producing and playing on other artist's records. In 2001 Ellis co-produced and performed (with the help of Tom) most of the backing tracks for the Atlantic Record's release "Don't Breathe A Word" by singer/songwriter Kevin Tihista as well as Tihista's follow-up album "Judo" (both now available on Parasol Records).
"Don't Breathe A Word" went on to become Uncut Music Magazine's #19 album of the year for 2001. Ellis co-produced and performed with Tom on a solo album for British cult rocker Nikki Sudden. Ellis had the opportunity to work with Jeff Tweedy of Wilco when Tweedy dropped by Epicycle's studio to contribute to Sudden's album "Red Brocade"(Glitterhouse Records/ Germany). Ellis also recorded & performed on The Chamber String's highly appraised "Gospel Morning" CD, several tracks from which were featured on the TV show Felicity. June & The Exitwound's "A Little More Haven Hamilton Please" CD also saw Ellis co-producing & performing on Parasol Record's biggest selling album to date.
During this busy period, Epicycle found the time to invest many studio hours writing and recording twelve songs for their new album "Swirl". "Swirl" utilizes a dazzling array of instruments, including an orchestra of strings, piccolo trumpets, trombones, banjos, Farfisa organs, bass harmonicas, African percussion, bullroarers, backwards guitars and layered harmony vocals. More doesn't necessarily always mean better... but in this case the band hopes it does and also hopes that you enjoy this album! Check out their take on David Bowie's "Rubberband". Thanks for listening.

Can I give it 10 stars?

Epicycle asks a lot of the listener, but go with them on Swirl. You'll be rewarded with clever songwriting, pro performances and how-did-they-think-of-that production. Describe Swirl as a pop music history lesson in Pink Floyd+psychedelic, Beach Boys and British Invasion with Van Dyke Parks stopping in to arrange here and there. This effort is never a flat imitation of Epicycle's influences but an affectionate, juicy kiss.

Odd and wonderful!

Swirl is just as undefineable as their first CD - Orange. Overall it seems more Pink Floyd and less Beatles, but that's not quite right either. Epicycle's style is wide enough to include everything in rock and pop, but it's not vague. They can crisply shift styles without sliding around in them.
The lyrics are just as wierd and funky as always. They have that cross between funny and making you think. For better or worse, what you think about can be strange. That's kind of fun.
Like Orange, this is a CD that has to grow on you. You won't get it in the first few listenings. You will slowly get more and more out of it until it becomes one of your all time favorites.
Highly Recommended for people who like any type of music.

I tried this CD without hearing it because of reviews I had read. It lived up to all I had read plus! Musically this CD is very well written and the talent of Epicycle just shines throughout the whole album. I love Power Pop music and I love Epicycle.
