ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
The ERIC BASCOM TRIO
Eric Bascom: Guitar
Edward Brainerd: Trumpet and Flugelhorn
Genevieve Rose: Bass Violin

The music on this CD consists of classic jazz, blues, and standards played in a small chamber, drummerless jazz trio setting. The sounds are clear, understated and swinging. This is a good collection of music sit back, relax, and enjoy.

I first formed this trio 15 years ago as a jazz repertory ensemble to play classic jazz, blues, standards, and original compositions is a small group setting. Although the musicians have changed from time to time over the years, the line-up of Ed Brainerd and Genevieve Rose has been my preferred choice and the most consistent. Many thanks to my good friends Ed and Genevieve for their many fine artistic contributions to the success of this group and for always saying "yes" whenever I call.

The music on this CD was selected during a quickly assembled recording session that took place back in January of 2006. We had received twelve inches of snow the day before and the air temperature on this day was about three degrees above zero. The studio was warm and so was the music. During this six hour session we laid down about twenty tracks - all mostly first takes - "live" - and with little over-dubbing. As the great musician Eric Dolphy once said, "When the music is over, it is gone in the air. You can never capture it again." What you hear here is the music that we were able to capture in the air on this cold winter's day.

Many thanks to Ed and Genevieve for their fine playing and continued support over these many years; Warren Amerman for his recording and engineering artistry; my new friends at Disc Makers for all of their help and guidance getting this CD package together; my daughter Arla for the beautiful artwork that adorns the CD front and back covers; my wife Judy for helping me with the photography; my son Eric IV for his continued support and inspiration; and to all of the listeners out there who have supported me and this group over the years; thank you one and all.

Finally, the process of making art of any kind is a very selfish act in and of itself because of the dedication and commitment involved in learning and perfecting your craft. All of this is done at the expense of the passage of time in one's life. It is often done with great sacrifice to the individual, their family, and their friends. A very special thank you to my wife Judy, my children Eric and Arla, and the rest of my family and friends. None of this would be possible without your love and support.

- Eric Bascom

Just like the Chet Baker-Doug Raney recordings, Bascom's guitar and Brainerd's trumpet and Rose's bass blend very well with each one taking solos. Bascom unselfishlylets the trumpet take front and center but never stops asserting his guitar work, all tied together very well with Rose's bass lines.

Eric Bascom's Trio recording is rich with melody, swing and soul, and it features a lovely selection of jazz and popular standards. He plays such challenging material as "All Blues", "A Child Is Born", and "Joy Spring" with aplomb; Eric, Genevieve Rose, and Ed Brainerd are among the many Western Massachusetts jazz artists who deserve a wider hearing.
