Playing Time – 60:31 -- After hearing Eric Elias’ leaner acoustic duo jazz guitar set with Luke Nelson on their “My Compliments” album, it’s icing on the cake to hear Eric’s skillful presentation in some larger musical collaborations.
Based in the Hartford, CT. area where he’s been nominated as one of their best solo performers, Eric Elias and Co. approach their music is straight ahead fashion. Covers and originals emanate Latin, swing, Gypsy and even some bebop influences. While liner notes and song credits are lacking, the music speaks for itself with abundant excitement and virtuosity. Elias plays arch top, nylon string, and steel string guitars, as well as electric or upright bass. Three other upright bassists help out -- Fran Iracci, Tim Larson, Luke Nelson. Other accompanists include Torsten Goods (nylon string guitar), Gregg Allen (percussion), and Kris Allen (alto sax). The soloist’s and combo’s choice of material is a combination of new gems, neglected classics, and some old standbys with new thrills. Samba De Orpheu, A Foggy Day, My Romance, Black Orpheus, Shadow of Your Smile, and Wave are some of my favorites tracks.
Elias has toured extensively, has released five albums, writes for Just Jazz Guitar magazine, and has authored 11 instructional books for jazz guitar, bass and mandolin. This well-rounded multi-instrumentalist from Connecticut is the total package with his fingers in many musical pies. We’ll be hearing much more about him in jazz circles, especially along the eastern seaboard. (Joe Ross, Roseburg, OR.)
