Album Notes

What happens when you stir a pot of soulful melodies with a funky acoustic guitar, put it over the flame of some deep latin rhythms and serve it with intimate vocals? You get "Tinted Glass," Erika Luckett's debut solo album.

Smokey vocals over a deeply grooving guitar. Stories and melodies that keep speaking to you long after the CD has stopped playing. It's like Joni Mitchell got together with Tom Jobim and decided to spend a month in Cuba.

Erika was born in Mexico, raised in Venezuela and Brazil, played in the Paris subways as a teenager and has spent the last nine years touring in the jazz circuit with her world fusion band, Wild Mango. After three albums with the band, she decided to venture out on her own and released "Tinted Glass" in February 2000.

Make It Anew

Erika Luckett is, in the most exact sense, a creative, not a reproductive. On the course of her dazzling evolution, she seldom repeats herself nor shows any attempts to settle down to a "signature style," which is often safe and convenient for artists. The main reason Erika doesn't follow this beaten path is her openness; it is not about her often mentioned receptivity; it is her perception of life and art as an open project. In retrospect, this first album expresses the open nature of this artist the most. It is fresh, both in sound and in spirit, and its reflecting beauty is capable of emphasizing any listner's heart. Yet, I insist here that, even in comparison of her following albums, "Tinted Glass" is full of unforgettable beauty. Anyone who appreciate her music should not overlook this for the sake of "update." This is how everything started. This first precious searching step gently encourages us to open our hearts, make our worlds anew.

Outstanding solo debut from this jewel of an artist

Erika Luckett's unique musical vision has fused genres for years, and this latest release showcases her songwriting talents, tasty and soulful vocals, and her awesome guitar chops. Her songs blend latin rhythms, american roots, and penetrating lyrics. I really love her song "Pennsylvania Avenue", which is especially pertinent during this election year. Buy It! and send her an e-mail asking when the next one is coming out...
