erika may sings jazz standards and originals, her charming voice and swinging flute are joined by Dave Black, Farshid Sotanshahi, and Billy Engel on guitars, Paul DiMarinis on tenor Saxophone, and Willem von Hombracht on upright bass for the cd, 'Miao Miao, cat in a hat'.
Flirty and sassy, describes 'My Heart Belongs to Daddy', 'Old Devil Moon', and 'Miao Miao', the title track written by erika may, as well as the dreamy 'Climate of your Mind'.
erika may's supple, octave spanning voice is showcased in the eclectic and melodically expressive tunes such as 'Twisted' and 'Harlem Nocturne'. Latin rhythms in 'Sway', 'Agua de Beber', and 'Softly as in a Morning Sunrise' with have you kicking up your heels.
A nod to bebop and trad-jazz is given in 'How High the Moon / Ornithology', Charlie Parker lives on!
Flamenco inspired the exquisite take on Autumn Leaves, erika may sings in French and Farshid's nimble fingers snap fiery castanets of notes and chords from his nylon-stringed guitar.
erika may is a formally trained multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter with an eclectic mix of edgy and deep music flecked with jazz, folk and various world influences. On this outing, soaring, lyrical melodies and emotionally driven performance create a dynamic experience of jazz standards and original songs.
erika may has performed as lead vocalist & flutist in the jazz quartet Rouged - and with groups as varied as - The Tina Jones Jazz Quartet, Zambra - a Sephardic band led by Rabbi James Stone Goodman, The Speckled Band - an English Country Dance group, and Latin Gypsy Flamenco bands such as - Sepantha, Acoustic Internote & Clave Sol with Amir Arab, Farshid Soltanshahi, and Phil Gomez. Also with Flamenco guitarist Chusco, the flamenco singers and dancers of the St. Louis Cultural Flamenco Society directed by Marisel Salacruz, and with the Aalim Dance Co. led by Selwa; Lois Marshall.
She has also performed with the St. Louis Symphony and with the St. Louis Repertory Theater.
She has a Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz Studies / Flute Performance granted from Webster University in St. Louis, MO.
