ERIK DARLING has been singing and writing about the concerns and experience of the human condition for all of his musical life---the songs on this Christmas CD flow out of that place: from the Civil War period song, “Bright Morning Stars,” (expressing the awareness of personal life), to the pathos of “Aunt Rhody’s Christmas” (expressing the sadness of war), to the idea that the best of what Santa may bring is in the realm of an idea, a feeling, a love (something not wrapped in a box) expressed in his original “Santa Claus is Comin’,” to the hope of what Christmas should be, in “Hear Them Bells,” we hear the concerns of this life and these times. And for anyone who has ever cut down or put up their own Christmas tree, they will laughingly relate to the “Revenge of the Christmas Tree.” One thing for sure: these songs are a fresh contributions to the usual sounds that we hear at this time of year. Good but not the greatest
author: Denis CollinsErik’s CD is good but not great. I enjoyed the title track but it grates a bit after twenty or so plays (I played it everyday in my car when travelling). The voice is very good and relaxed with the songs but somehow I was hoping for a little more. Still it will be added to my group of CDs to be played each Christmas morning.
A supurb Christmas album
author: Lee BelcherThis is one of the best Christmas albums I have ever heard. It is wonderful. The title song is well worth the entire price of the album, the title song is in fact priceless. If you have not heard Erik Darling's title song here you have really missed a very special Christmas treat.
