Album Notes

Ernest B. Newsom (Ernie), pastor of the Sudanese Presbyterian Church, Gallatin, TN has produced his first CD. The CD entitled, “Inspirational
Instrumental Nuggets” is a compilation of “soulful religious hymns played by Ernie. He plays the alto sax for some of the selections and the soprano sax on others. Accompanying him on the keyboard is John Howse, (Bud), Minister of Music, Elder’s Chapel United Methodist Church, Smyrna, TN.
The selections on the CD are: “I Will Trust In The Lord”, “I Want Jesus To Walk With Me”, “If I Can Help Somebody”, “My Jesus I Love Thee”, “Were You There”, “His Eye Is On The Sparrow”, and “How Great Thou Are”.
On this CD “Ernie” And “Bud” combine their musical talents in an exciting, passionate and creative way in order to produce a unique instrumental arrangement of Spirituals using Smooth Jazz as a basis.

“Ernie” began playing the clarinet at the age of fourteen when he joined the Manassas High School Band, Memphis, TN. There he played four years until graduation and played two more years at Johnson C. Smith University, Charlotte, N.C. He decided to discontinue playing music after transferring to Tennessee State University, Nashville, TN, where he later earned the B.S. and M.S. in Psychology. After teaching at Southern University, Baton Rouge LA, for three years, he was called into the ministry and then eventually earned the Doctorate of Ministry from Chicago Theological Seminary. He served as Chaplain for the VA Medical Centers in North Chicago, Il and Murfreesboro, TN.
Also, he served as a Naval Chaplain, CAPT. (reserves) and was the Command Chaplain for the Sixth Fleet (res) upon retirement.

After retiring, “Ernie decided to return back to his Musical Roots about five years ago. He not only returned to his lost love, the Clarinet, which is mother bought for him while in High School but added the Alto and Soprano Saxophones to his musical repertoire.

All of the above experiences and more have provided Ernie with the tools, the insight and knowledge that he has incorporated in his ministry and in this CD.

He sees his music as a way of extending his ministry and is grateful to God for this tremendous gift. Through his music he has gone to places and met people he would never had dreamed of . He and his accompanist, “Bud” are invited to play at various church programs, social events, festivals, weddings, concerts reunions, retreats, and etc. If you or your church or club are interested in inviting “Ernie and “Bud” to play for you or in obtaining a CD as described in the above please contact “Ernie” at the following e-mail address: erbune@aol.com.

Sophisticated, yet spiritual - a great combination!
author: Debbie Mayfield
I have purchased this CD and listen to it often. "Sophisticated Spirituality" is the term I would use to describe Newsom's style. I am anxiously awaiting his next release due in the Spring of 2007!
