Album Notes

Ernest Gonzales is a "Hyphenated American" aka Hispanic, Chicano, Latino, or Mexican -- whatever you want to call it. He grew up next door to the Alamo, but his Spanish is muy pequito. Gonzales is the only child of an electrician father and a Home Depot customer service rep mom. Latch-key only child = video games, drawing trees, making bow and arrows, too much MTV, and pizza pockets. Somehow in between summer engineering camps Gonzales decided to go to art school, but he has no plans of painting the Virgen de Guadalupe.

During college, Gonzales began experimenting with music production using old school computer programs called trackers…he also used scholarship money to buy his first drum machine and upgraded software. (See kids...it does pay off to make good grades.) Upon graduation, Gonzales started Exponential, an indie hip hop/electronic record label based in San Antonio. The label’s first release is a mix called River Walk Riots by DJ Jester the Filipino Fist. (A fellow Texan and member of Kid Koala’s turntable live act).

In the last several years, Gonzales has recorded a handful of underground releases under the alias, Theory of Everything. With each release, Gonzales’ sound has grown and evolved from experimental hip hop to electronic lullabies inspired by the birth of his first daughter.
In 2006, Gonzales released a label compilation called Collapsing Culture that received praise from both press and radio. ReGen magazine even named Collapsing Culture as one of the best CD's of the year.

With his latest and first official release, While on Saturn's Rings, Gonzales takes his sound in a different direction by incorporating live guitar and allowing more of his influences to surface. While on Saturn’s Rings is playful and psychedelic yet contemplative. The music is a mash up of styles from indie rock and hip hop to 8 bit video games and down south beats….but you can call it whatever you want to.

Some Reviews
"Taking cues from 8-bit games of yore, downtempo, and even a little indie-rock, Ernest Gonzales could find himself at home with Morr Music or Anticon artists alike. Combining melancholic guitarlines, subtle vocal samples, and acoustic hip-hop percussion, this San Antonio-based producer is on the road to making a name for himself in any number of musical circles. "While On Saturn's Rings" is a just over two-minute experience that's interesting, delicate, and slightly banging all at the same time. " - XLR8R

"an artist to definitely keep an eye on..." - Igloo Magazine

While on Saturn's Rings "fourteen songs (not tracks) are admirably succinct, and show Gonzales bringing together disparate bits, blending them into multi-faceted wholes" - Textura

"at heart a classic example of IDM at the most pleasant end of the spectrum, warm and organic, relaxing without being pandering. It's far too smart to be easy listening, but it's still wonderfully easy to listen to." - ReGen Magazine

"I am here to tell you to pre-order it cause its a good one." - Analog Giant

"reminiscent of a rave being invaded by roadhouse performers. Clever beats and sinuous electronics achieve a bouncy allure that is tastily embellished by the guitar riffs." - Sonic Curiousity

I was drawn to the drums in the title track when I heard it on a public radio station. Later I heard the whole CD and also really liked Cave Paintings, Life is But a Dream, What Heaven Could Be, and Song for Arlo. I am a variety lover, and found the most variety in these songs.
