Album Notes

"Watts plays in a virtuosic post-Coltrane style, with a fine, distinctive tone and an expansive technique that permits him to generate long, cleanly articulated lines that dance along confidently even at challenging tempos.... But he can easily shift to a warm expressiveness, as he demonstrates on such slow tunes as the ruminative "Enchanted." And he gets a lovely, mournful sound on the Spirit Flute for the exotic, folklike title track." JAZZTIMES April 2006

One of the tracks from this recording "Cirle of Friends" best describes the group on this CD, ERNIE WATTS QUARTET. Watts has been playing with these musicians so long, they maintain their musical connection effortlessly. They often don't need to communicate in words. And these four players have personal, as well as musicAL ties -- they are family to each other, which adds another dimension to the music. As Ernie says, "We have history. When you play with the same people for a long time, the music evolves organically into a group voice, rather than four separate voices. Instead of playing music together, we become music together. This is a real band" ERNIE WATTS QUARTET brings "Spirit Song" to life!

spirit song

How does he do it? As a tenor player I envy EW’s inimitable wonderful tone, which is present throughout in the Spirit Song CD’s pleasing mix of hard driving straight- ahead jazz and big sound ballads. Great rhythm section which shows its stuff as a section and individually. Highly recommended. I’d like to add some of EW’s originals to my quartet’s repertoire. Where do I get the charts?

great tunes, great playing

My favorite tune is ASFEW. I fell in love with the tune when I heard it on Ernie Watts homepage. All the charts are great. There is a WIDE variety in style. And ending with Spirit Song with Ernie on spirit flute is the perfect touch. If you like tight grooves, interesting solo work, and music with style, this cd is a MUST!

This cd had just come out when I heard this group live at an outdoor concert in Milwaukee. Imagine. As it turned out, they played the whole thing. I love a good bass, and I prefer a deeper tenor to a soprano sax. I'm was in heaven listening to them, and the cd is just as terrific. The integrity of Jazz is so obvious. Thank God for recordings.
