ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
El Son del Pueblo is a duet that performs the folk music of Veracruz, Mexico. The duet is comprised of John Robles, a native of Santa Paula, California, who sings and plays the Veracruz folk harp (arpa jarocha), jarana and requinto jarocho and Jorge Mijangos, who was born in San Cristobal de Las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico who sings and plays various sizes of jarana jarocha as well as percussion.

The \'Son Jarocho\' developed in the southern portion of the Mexican state of Veracruz. Southern Spanish influences on the music include the harmonic structure, verse forms and the use of stringed instruments, unknown in Mexico until the arrival of the Spaniards. African influences are evident in the syncopated rhythmic patterns of the son jarocho. African styles were brought to Latin America with slaves as well as from Spain itself (North Africans controlled Muslim Iberia before the Christian re-conquest created the Spanish nation), and many contemporary jarocho musicians are African-Mexicans. Evidence of African singing characteristics includes choral and individual call and response to a lead singer, slurring or bending of the notes and a sarcastic or irreverent attitude.
While Indian influence is more difficult to identify, one characteristic is the frequent choice of animals as lyrical themes. Prior to the Spanish arrival, animals symbolized deities and divine forces in indigenous religions. Son jarocho lyrics depict the iguana, the hawk, the woodpecker, etc., and give these animals human characteristics. The end result is a very ebullient, exciting music, typically with a bright 6/8 rhythm. The son jarocho is very popular in Ballet Folklorico performances, where the women dress in full white lace dresses with black embroidered aprons, typical of those used in Andalucia, Spain. The staccato dance style is reminiscent of the Flamenco style, and the son jarocho is just as lively as Flamenco music.

The mission of El Son del Pueblo is to diffuse the traditional music of Veracruz to the widest possible audience, and in so doing spread an awareness and appreciation of the culture of Mexico. El Son del Pueblo also wishes to educate the public about the variety of regional styles of Mexican music, of which the Mariachi tradition, while it may be the most universally recognized, is only a part.

Un CD Maravilloso
Some years ago I had the good fortune and pleasure of spending an evening in and around Piazza Garibaldi. I was immediately drawn to the small groups of players dressed in white utilizing the Arpa. El Son del Pueblo takes me back in a most happy way! Terrific music well played and sung.

Great music!
I just got back from Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico and while I was in Mexico I looked all over the city for a CD with VeraCruz music. Needless to say I did not find a CD so my Hubby said look online and Wow I could not believe my eyes. The CD is great listening. I just found two more CD through another outfit and I am looking forward to these CD. Thank you for your quick service.

This CD is Awsome, Without a doubt one of the BEST!!!
This CD is one of the most spectacular CD's I have ever had the privilege of listening! This music is without a doubt addictive and hard not to keep on listening over and over again. By Far, Jorge Mijangos and John Robles have cut a CD without equal. I'm hoping another CD is in the making by them and comes out soon!

While it is neither mariachi nor flamenco, if you like either one you're going to fall over with glee upon hearing this album of the traditional 'Son Jarocho' music of Veracruz, Mexico. Featuring brilliant vocals and the bright tone of the Veracruz folk harp (arpa jarocha), this is one album that will have you heading for the border and reaching for the Jose Quervo! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

this cd was bought for a competition that a friends daughter is doing with two other children. we researched the regional dance but could not find the piece that was needed until we came upon this site, what a selection and to cap it all the right piece of music, el canelo, thank you, we have listened to the other tracks and there is a good chance we amy use other pieces.

An excellent CD with the unique music of Veracruz!
This is a professionally played and well crafted set of music. Clearly these musicians have a natural talent and their sound together makes you want to get up and dance. I highly recommend this CD for people of varied musical taste!

Love this! Brings back memories of a few days and nights in Veracruz back in the late 80s. All it lacks is the percussive stomp of a woman\'s heels on a resonant wooden stage--but I\'ll just have to return to Veracruz for that. A very uplifting CD.

What a treat!
I enjoy authentic, traditional music from many cultures, but it was a special treat to discover John & Jorge and the wonderful sounds of Veracruz -- they are both terrific! I had the pleasure to hear them once in person and just had to find this CD so I can enjoy their rich voices and great instrumentals anytime I want. Really good stuff; what a treat!
