Album Notes

I recorded 'if timing is everything' in the hills outside LA with several good friends in 2001 and my producer Michael James (New Radicals, Hole, L7). We took over a house in Topanga Canyon during the mid-summer swelt to tackle tunes I'd been carrying around for some time. It was a strange period for me, I had been fired from the film biz by a close friend, was flat broke and had a low tolerance for doing anything meaningless...like work. Instead, I decided to find some new friends, like Citibank and Chase, to help me say what I needed to say. I was green, the best time for anything.

Radiate, Choices, The Ride are my favorites. They remind of my small Venice apartment with no A/C and sandy carpets but two blocks from the beach and directly across from government housing. Host to a double homicide two days after moving in, can't make that up. Between the sound of homeless surveyors and chopper tours, I made a little home and locked myself in a room to think. When I listen back to the album, I don't leave Venice. I see palm trees grown out of weeds, I hear half hearted mates, I hear hope and the pursuit of belief, but what I hear most, is a younger version of myself laying a path.

I first heard "Radiate" on holiday in Denmark. No one had a clue who it was and 6 mos later I finally tracked down that artist/album via MySpace. After several listens, all I can say is nice job Estes. Plenty of catchy tunes with surprisingly thoughtful lyrics. Kudos to this indie artist for finding me across the sea!!!
