Album Notes

"Ether" is an original independent musical project based in Sydney with a completely predictable range of musical influences. Rock, Pop, C & W and Eastern are all pirated liberally (though legally) and funnelled into the songs contained on the CD.

The music has been assembled partly in an old warehouse and partly in a loungeroom in Newtown, an inner city suburb of Sydney. Newtown is a colourful place, full of yuppies, hippies and perhaps the largest concentration of pierced navels in the Southern Hemisphere.

There are three of us featured on the CD. Glenn Manser comes from a bluegrass and country music background, Paul Hardman from a pop/rock classical background and Garth Adam from somewhere in between.

The CD is a home recording. We had to choose between buying a packet of tea bags or making the CD. We took the cheaper option.

A bit of a meander off the beaten path......

If you fused a wayward Billy Bragg with Elvis Costello and added a touch of whimsy and funk this is probably what you would end up with. The music is wonderful and the vocals could be a bit stronger with a little more definition, but suit this CD appropriately. A worth while purchase for those with a broad range of music tastes.

An outstanding indie.

Ether is the sleeper of the year. The songwriting is superb and the vocals are emotive. There's a bit of a rebellious streak in this recording and it's a true break away from Garth Adam's TOFOG roots. Stripped down and beguiling, the music is honest and has an integrity so lacking in the commercial world. The group masters a broad range of styles from lanquid tempos to folk rock. Witness the edgy blues of "Why Do You Lie to Me?," the gorgeous and airy "Long Way Home," the dusky "Damned Beautiful" with it's sultry bass line and haunting piano, the moody "Not My Way," the picturesque "Crescent Moon," and the imaginative alluring percussive acoustics of "Questions" and "So Wrong." The listener can't help but be hooked by the excellent musicianship that weaves a thread creating a beautiful flow. This is truly an inspired work by three very innovative artists.
