Album Notes

Euan Burton Collective Euan Burton (Bass), Ed Johnston (Tenor Saxophone), Phil Cardwell (Trumpet), Barry Edwards (Guitar), Thomas Gibbs (Piano), Doug Hough (Drums and Cymbals) Double Bassist and composer Euan Burton releases his debut this fall entitled Collective. He brings together some of Britain’s top young improvisers from both England and Scotland for a set of his original compositions. They draw on influences ranging from the Downtown scene in New York to those closer to home such as great British jazz musicians John Taylor and Kenny Wheeler and incorporate elements of Folk, Rock and Classical music with these. The music is written with strong melodies at its core but looks to juxtapose these with different rhythms and forms which vary from the conventional. Each piece often has several sections with different soloists taking you on a journey through each of them. Euan Burton grew up in East Kilbride, Scotland where he took up Bass Guitar at the age of 10. After being introduced to Jazz in his teens Euan switched to Double Bass and went on to study at Birmingham Conservatoire where he graduated from with a Bmus Jazz (Hons). While in Birmingham he studied with resident Bass tutor Arnie Somogyi and also with guest tutors Dave Holland, Dave Douglas and Drew Gress. Euan also has studied privately with Bassists Ed Howard, Thomas Morgan and Drummer Ari Hoenig. After leaving Birmingham Euan has since moved back to Scotland where he has become an active part of the scene performing regularly with musicians such as Tom Gibbs, Phil Cardwell, Doug Hough, Graeme Scott, Konrad Wisznieski, Paul Towndrow, Paul Harrison, Stu Brown, Alyn Cosker, Laura MacDonald, Steve Hamilton, Tom Bancroft, Gina Rae, Cathie Rae, Kevin McKenzie and Ross Milligan. Euan has performed at Edinburgh, Glasgow, Islay, Birmingham and Cheltenham Jazz festivals. Earlier this year he took part in a live BBC recording session at the City Halls in Glasgow with the Konrad Wisznieski Quartet which was broadcast on BBC Radio Scotland’s “Jazz House,” programme.
