evën sh'siyah blends original music with lyrics taken form an array of classic Jewish texts and their own English lyrics. The band's musical influences are eclectic, and include folk, rock, Mid-Eastern, and jazz. The band has integrated these genres creating a cohesive and unique musical soundscape of its own. (One critic accused them of sounding too much Like The Allman Brothers!)
The band has been playing together for nearly 15 years and released three CDs, "...through your gates, Jerusalem", "The Way Jews Rock", and "Wake Up". Their songs have enjoyed radio airplay here in the U.S., as well as in Israel and Europe. Their live performances have become increasingly popular, in that they have an uncanny ability to fit their performance to the audience.
"Wake Up" has been favorable reviewed in the press, including the Jerusalem Post: http://www.jpost.com/servlet/Satellite?cid=1138622522072&pagename=JPost%2FJPArticle%2FShowFull
evën sh'siyah is composed of seven musicians from Chicago: Elisha Prero (guitar), David Margulis (bass), Ely Cooper (guitar), Mitch Jacoby (guitar), Matt Kanter (drums), Zev Goldberg (percussion), and Mark Freedman (keyboards).
evën sh'siyah is Hebrew for "foundation stone." According to Jewish tradition, the original element of all Creation was this primordial stone, from which the entire world came into existence.
All CDs have liner notes with translation and transliteration.
