This program, dedicated to organ compositions, is built as a comparison between Russian and German music schools.
Organ culture in Russia has been developing since the 18th century. It at once became a secular instrument for concert performing and domestic music playing. The great Russian composer M. Glinka liked to play his friend's cabinet organs. Some of his works were arranged for organ at that time. Fugue in E flat major, presented on this CD is one. Traditions founded by M. Glinka were later developed by Russian composers in the 19th and 20th centuries.
A. Glazunov, a well known Russian composer and director of the St. Petersburg Conservatory at the beginning of the 1900s, wrote a number of works for organ. His Prelude and Fugue in D major, Op. 93 was included in the Anthology "Contemporary Masters of Organ" compiled by the French composer and organist J. Joubert. S. Taneyev, an outstanding composer and a master of counterpoint, wrote Choral Variations for this Anthology. Both are presented on this CD.
Among the greatest German composers of organ music of the 17th and 18th centuries are J. Pachelbel, J. Walther and S. Scheidt. Their outstanding and original works of beauty and lyricism continue to delight listeners today.
Sergei Tsatsorin is a popularizer of Russian organ music. He is a graduate of the Leningrad (1975) and Tallinn (1980) Conservatories.
