Expo ‘70’s “Animism” is the form of a living being, driving deep, dark drones that resonate in the embodiment of life. “Animism” is a collection of improvisations made mostly out of heavily effected guitar, recorded and performed by Justin Wright. Animism, the belief system that does not accept the separation of body from soul or of spirit from matter, is based upon the belief that personalized souls are found in all things, to some degree, governing their existence. The sounds found within this disc truly represent the spirit and soul of the moods created by Wright’s improvisations as an extension of his personal creative consciousness and are presented in a
suite of reflexive and introspective sounds that, when assembled, create an arrangement of compositions that writhe in darkness, seethe in lament, and strive for the ever elusive nirvana.
While Expo ‘70’s previous CD-R only releases have explored the inner dimensions of ambient drones and psychedelic soundscapes, “Animism” brings a new breath of life to Wright’s work. This album was conceptualized when Wright accidentally stumbled upon two tracks that he had recorded in August ‘06 and had forgotten about until October. These tracks eventually
became “Mahogany Lake,” a dreamlike and airy swirl of guitar akin to Brian Eno, Phillip Glass and Ash Ra Tempel, and “Eagle Talons,” Wright’s dark and metallic droning composition that resembles sounds of Black Sabbath, Om, and Sunn O))). “Universal Horizon” is an improvisation of 3 gongs; a meditative trip along an etherial plane and “Missing Sun”, multi-layered acoustic guitars, synths and saxophone, break up the longer tracks, giving shape and form to “Animism”. “Entering the Night on a Highway of Astral Projection” and “Shape-Shifting Mountain Mover”, the album’s two longest tracks, invoke the listener’s emotions and visceral state of mind as a
long journey into a heated frenzy of psychedelic entanglement.
Like sound samples from the dawn of the ages, these tracks conspire to arouse the listener’s imagination, forcing them to remove themselves from space and time. Expo ‘70 has released five CD-R albums, a split CD and a 3” CD-R since it’s inception in 2003, building a cult following within the USA, Canada and Europe. Expo ’70 continues to explore new sound dimensions, constantly recording and enticing new listeners with his musical
explorations.
