Sincerest form of flattery

The last decade of the 20th century didn't as much produce any great innovations in music though people who like rap and remix music may beg to differ.
Instead it produced the Tribute Album nowadays almost matter of fact but in the beginning the tributes simply came from session musicians who just did a job and they were only tributes if the album title said so.
Now its nearly a genre in itself as its not only known names who make them but Indie acts-the bands who sprang up after the punk onslaught and had been influenced by the Beatles and the British Invasion.
Here is a collection of unknown Indie acts from the States with a tribute to George Harrison, songs from his Beatles days (11) and songs from the solo years, mainly the earliest ones-4 are from the first album. The later song When we was Fab probably inspired the CD title and like a few others on here is sung by a girl who appeared once in Liverpool and has the unbelievable name of Wendy Ip!

Tribute albums can be the sincerest form of flattery, though many prove to be sadly disappointing, failing to add to the magic of the original recordings. The death of George Harrison ‘The quiet Beatle’ shocked many in the pop world and it is no surprise that a Harrison tribute CD is now available. He Was Fab A Loving Tribute to George Harrison is musically refreshing as it is not the expected collection of big name artists imposing their slant on Harrison’s well loved back catalogue. Tim Anthony, the New York musician and producer, carefully selected young Indie pop artists to give their personal interpretations of 19 classic Harrison songs. Anthony’s love and affection for this music shows in these fresh versions of old songs seen through young eyes.
Every artist and track on He Was Fab is exceptional. Harrison’s musical career is fully documented with such numbers as My Sweet Lord, the first track by any of the former Beatles to reach the top of the charts, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Something, Here Comes The Sun, plus I Need You and You Like Me Too Much from the album Help. This collection was created with great devotion and respect for these songs which have been given refreshingly new treatments without losing the famous Rickenbacker guitars or the original spirit of the songs. They deserve to be heard by a wide audience.
