Album Notes

"If your looking for a Fresh musical experience, you'll want to check out Facets." -Len Tunderman, Middletown Press

Frank Sr., who began his study of the guitar at age ten, continued his education at the State University of New York at Stony Brook where he studied performance and classical theory. In addition, he received certification in modern harmony and arrangement from Berklee College of Music Boston.

In 1982, after an audition before Fritz Maraffi, the director of the Roman Festival Orchestra, Frank Sr. was awarded a scholarship to attend the Orchestra's Summer Institute Tour of Rome, Italy.

Frank Sr. has performed with the Spanish Dance Company Sol y Sombra serving as both a soloist and an accompanist. He also has been commissioned by the Suffolk County Arts Council, the New York State Arts Council and various other arts councils. With some twenty years of performance experience, Frank Natter Sr. brings his highly expressive classical technique to the ensemble Facets.

Guided by his father, Frank Jr. began his music training at age twelve. By age seventeen, Frank Jr. was the guitarist and back-up vocalist of the rock band Hey-Hey Tommy. With the group, he performed at many major Connecticut venues including, Toad's Place in New Haven, El-'N'-Gee Club in New London, and other Connecticut clubs and cafés. The group later embarked on a transcontinental, U.S. tour.

A diverse musician, Frank Jr. has been hired to play in various pit-band ensembles for musicals such as "Pippin", "Grease", and a cabaret version of "Rent". Frank Jr. continued to build a reputation as a Connecticut folk artist with the folk-blues ensemble Eli's Stomphouse. With his instrumental and vocal diversity, and love of many musical styles, Frank Jr. is the inevitable complement to Frank Sr.'s intense, dynamic command of the guitar.

Facets is the Natters' desire to, as they say, "make good music". With father and son bringing their own musical expression and style to the partnership, they quickly discover that each compliments the other in the writing and arranging of their music.

I bought Over The Blue Land back in 2000 right after it was recorded. Frank Natter Jr. was my guitar teacher while I lived in CT. Thanks to him, I've gotten started with my own music career. Crooked Jack is my favorite song. But, I listen to the album in it's entirety over and over. It's great.

It's a CD you want to play more than once. The first time you hear the vocals, words and melody. The second time you pick up all the nuances of the guitars. The third time you just listen and relax. A great CD.

Over the Blue Land is a powerful album that combines the bright tones of steel-string guitar, the mellow sound of nylon, top notch vocals, and great songwriting. The CD opens on a brilliant note with "Over the Blue Land." A great song in general, this one is my favorite lyrically/vocally. Frank Jr. makes his singing abilities clear, and Frank Sr. produces a beautiful classical-guitar sound. The rest of the tracks follow suit- both musicians work to lay down an intricate wall of sound. I found the songs songs to be a unique and intersting combination of folk, jazz, and classical techniques. Being a live album, the Facets showed that they can sound great without "studio magic" and loads of guitar distortion. Definitely a CD to pick up, I can't think of any way to critique it. A final note: down with pop music!
