ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Call them brothers in arms. Toronto-based band Fairchild comprise four brothers in their 20’s, and they’re united not just genetically but in a creative quest to create compelling modern alternative rock. That is exactly what they deliver on Dare To Believe, a debut album full of passion and power.

This is a superbly-crafted and highly radio-friendly work, one reflecting the long hours the band put in at Studio 8. Not that this seemed like work to singer/guitarist/lyricist Jeff Smith. “I love the whole studio process, where you get magic happening by using the bells and whistles,” he says. “We tried a lot of our ideas out, and it was a really positive experience.”

The album’s first single, “Dare To Believe” introduces Fairchild to commercial radio in a can’t-be-denied fashion. The gutsy vocals of Jeff, searing lead guitar of Donny, and high-octane rhythm section of bassist David and drummer Phill combine for a thunderous and dynamic sound, while the lyrics reflect the band’s commitment to the music they love.“It was one of the last songs written for the album last year,” recalls Jeff. “About a month before I had to start singing in the studio I lost my voice, and a specialist diagnosed nodules. I was freaking out, but I went on natural remedies and it healed. The song came out of that experience - ‘Can I dare to believe that we’ll be able to continue doing this?’

Jeff explains that Fairchild’s creative process involves “getting together, practicing, and coming up with riffs. The base of the song will come, then I’ll come up with a melody and lyrics around that. I base the song on the emotion of the music that comes first, and my whole thing as a songwriter is to make emotions tangible.”

He does just that on Dare To Believe, via songs ranging from a haunting power ballad like “Don’t Say Goodbye” to the raunchy rock of “I’ll Take You” (“when I come, I deliver”) and the sizzling “Take Me Away.” Fairchild’s acknowledged influences range from the current sounds of Nickelback and Fall Out Boy to classic rockers like Led Zeppelin and Aerosmith, but they’ve rapidly fashioned their own distinct sonic identity.

There is no better collaboration than that of siblings, and each Smith brother is an asset in creating Fairchild's original sound. Jeff and Phill played together extensively in previous bands, with Jeff joking that “we came as a pair. You can’t have one without the other! Donny and David were too young at the time. They were like our roadies and groupies, and then it was ‘O.K., you’re cool enough to play with us now!’”

Over the past three years, the four brothers have played hundreds of gigs in Ontario schools, as part of a safe schools initiative sponsored by a non-profit organization. That experience will prove invaluable as they hit the long rock ‘n roll road as Fairchild.

They’re out to rock your world. Listen up!
